R Cleve Lewellyn Dies After Long Illness
Surry County banker R Cleve Lewellyn died after years of heart ailment while actively managing his three banks. Born November 1 1844 in Dobson he built a banking career at Dobson Mount Airy and Elkin and led the Surry County Loan Trust Co He was a prominent Democratic leader organizing rallies and congregations at the Dobson courthouse with visits from state leaders He lived in Dobson where Panera services were held at the Baptist Church burial followed at Dobson cemetery Surviving are his widow former Miss Fannie Folger and two brothers plus several relatives.

Mount Airy Businessman Roy Tesh Ends His Life
Roy Tesh a 51 year old lumberman prominent in Mount Airy was found dead at his Shorttown Hill plant from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Coroner John L Wolts reported the death as suicide noting a 22 rifle nearby and that he died at the hospital about 45 minutes after the wound. Funeral services were held at Grace Moravian Church with burial in Oakdale Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Ethel Gardner and four sons Clinton R D Jr. and Vance Tesh.

Little Symphony Orchestra Feature At Rockford Street Auditorium
The North Carolina Little Symphony will feature Asheville soprano Josephine Cunningham as soloist with the orchestra in Rockford Street auditorium at 8 p m Monday. Cunningham, seventeen, studied voice under Mrs John Kemps and has appeared with the North Carolina Symphony in Asheville Chapel Hill and Raleigh before the state legislature. The Little Symphony will be conducted by Benjamin Swalin with Cunningham as soloist.

Local Youth Injured by City Truck on Orchard Street
Sam McMillan Jr six year old son of Mr and Mrs Sam McMillan of Willow Street is gravely injured with a fractured skull after a city owned truck driven by Vestal Hollingsworth Hardy 31 struck him on Orchard Street while crossing noon on the way home from school. He was taken to Martin Memorial Hospital where authorities said the driver was at fault and no charges were filed.

Mount Airy Plans New High School On North South Street
Final plans and blueprints are underway for Mount Airy’s modern high school on North South Street with work to start before spring. Dr. Moir S. Martin says the brick building will cost about 21.4 and include 14 classrooms a library a homemaking department two science labs a cafe seating 250 and a 100 pupil commercial department. The facility will also feature a band room music room and an auditorium for 1000. The school system now has 80 teachers 67 white and 13 Negro and five local schools with enrollments totaling over 2 000 students fortified by accreditation for white and Negro schools.

He has served at St James Mission Tanna Alaska since last summer. He was born in Mount Airy and attended Hargrave Military Academy and UNC graduating in 1940. He served five years in the U S armed forces attaining the rank of lieutenant and was wounded in the Normandy invasion.
