Mount Airy High School band members, in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, will board buses at 11 a.m. and expect to reach Granite City around 8 a.m. tomorrow. Director Gene Jones praised their 85 degree parade march of eight miles as creditable despite not finishing in the top four.
Country Club Gardens in Mount Airy becomes Granite City’s first luxury apartment project. Richard Vaughn and John Lewis expect completion by midsummer with occupancy soon after. John S. Clark Construction builds three 2 story buildings with four units each on North Main near Country Club Road.
Mount Airy police records show 33 arrests over the weekend including 16 auto violations with eight drunken driving charges and 10 liquor law infractions. Vaughn said several apartment units have leases signed and the project should be fully leased by completion, noting the complex as Granite City’s first luxury rental with carpeting and built-in appliances.
Deputies report a break in at Lester Faulkner residence Saturday evening while the family was away. Entry was gained by removing a double screen from a window and thieves left with a .410 shotgun, a wrist watch, an alarm clock, a lady’s pocketbook, six packs of cigarettes and car papers. Loss valued at 347 dollars as investigators continue.
The Mount Airy Lions Club will meet at 6 30 tonight at Ray's Starlite Restaurant. Hy ton Wright leads the program, and president Johnny Ed wards urges all members to attend.
A two car mishap at about 8 a m near South and Worth streets left a passenger injured and Riggs cited for failure to yield. Richard Delmer Riggs 41 of Mount Airy crossed Worth Street in a 1941 Buick and was struck by Dorothy Mae Parker Lowe 18 driving a 1961 Buick. Nonnie Mae Galyean Parker Park Drive was hospitalized with non serious injuries.
A Pilot Mountain officer chased a fleeing 1966 Chevelle after a traffic stop failed. Two youths from West Palm Beach, Glenn Huggins and Terry King, were found nearby and identified as North Carolina training school escapees. They had stolen the Chevelle after fleeing Mocksville and Dunn. Both suspects faced county charges. the car was returned to its owner.
Mount Airy commissioners unanimously approved amending Alcoholic Beverage Control revenue distribution, setting 5 percent each to an Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center and the Airport Authority, with 10 percent added from town share. They urged ABC election authorization and released a $5,000 bond to Cablevision of Mount Airy, plus zoning hearing set for March 18 and Belton reappointed to the Housing Authority.
Miss Verona West principal of North Main Jones School is a patient at Northern Surry Hospital after surgery on Thursday. Hospital officials report she is recuperating satisfactorily.
Claude W. Eason of Lowgap died Monday morning from a gun accident at his home Sunday afternoon. The 61 year old was shot when the rifle he carried discharged while he descended steps at his residence. He died at Waddell Hospital in Galax Virginia after hospitalization. Eason, a retired teacher and former Longap Post Office postmaster, is survived by his wife Eva Lee Greene a sister Ida Baines and half brother Bob Eason. Funeral at Mountain View Baptist Church at 2 pm with burial in the church cemetery.
Truck Corporation Cooke Trucking Co. of Mount Airy has been incorporated to transport freight goods and commodities. Authorized capital is 1,000 shares NPV. Officials are Fred Allen Cooke Paige Smith and John C W Gardner, all of Mount Airy.
A gospel sing is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Woodland Baptist Church on Highland Drive. Featured performers are the Faith Quartet Gospel Singers Woodland Trio and Quartet, all from Mount Airy. Reverend Johnnie Nance, pastor, invites the public to attend.
Deputies arrested Mitchell McKinney Ayers age 17 and Coy Eugene Goins on breaking and entering charges after evidence of stolen items surfaced. A ring and two watches were traced to buyers, with a tape player linked to a 1962 Ford on Jalyean Street. Bond set at 900 dollars each and hearings scheduled in Surry District Court.
