Mount Airy board restarts water project talks and facility work
The Mount Airy City Board of Commissioners resumed deliberations on a joint water supply project with Surry County and the Soil Conservation Service, rescinding an earlier halt. The board also approved hospital area lighting, East Oakdale Street work, Sunday hours for the Family Hobby Center, and rental of four acres at the water works site. A public hearing on Factory Street zoning was set for March 17.

Coach Killed in Auto Crash Near Winston-Salem
James Willie Graham 38 longtime coach at J. J. Jones High School Mount Airy died after a 1957 Chevrolet left US 52 struck a bridge abutment. Driver Ira J. Clark Jr. of Mount Airy was seriously injured. Graham died at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Graham guided girls basketball after overseeing a tournament run and was a Mars Hill Baptist Church member.

Cullen Merritt Rites Held at Central Church
The final rites for Cullen Renchen Merritt aged 92 of 182 Rockford St Mount Airy were conducted at Central Methodist Church. He died Friday morning at Northern Surry Hospital. A Wake County native he was a retired supervisor of Mount Airy Furniture Co. and a longtime Scoutmaster who helped form the first Roy Scout Troop in Mount Airy. Surviving are a son Will J. Merritt and a sister Mrs Marvin Sparger. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery.

The Pilot Mountain United Fund wrapped up with 100 percent of its $10 431 goal, the largest budget in town history, reflecting strong community and business support. The drive began in October and added the Pitot Mountain Rescue Squad to member agencies, boosting the target and contributing to a 20 percent rise in actual contributions from last year. Officials praised co chairmen Joe Pell and Cecil Hill and thanked workers and the public for the cooperative effort. The next month will see the annual meeting to select officers and directors.
