Five Surry Men Trapped by Ex Addict and SBI
In Surry Superior Court Friday Cleo Thomas a cured addict and an SBI agent who posed as a carnival worker recounted three weeks of staged investigations to build narcotics case against five Mount Airy men. Four defendants pleaded guilty and one offered no defense as Judge Walter E Johnston Jr sentenced them to prison or jail terms with suspended portions and fines. The men were arrested in October 1954 by SBI agents Mount Airy police and Surry deputies on charges of selling possessing and transporting narcotics. More details on page 8.

Sheriff and Police Officers Leave for Florida to Fetch Prisoner

Prominent Carroll County Preacher Dies Saturday
Rev. William Jackson Payne, 78, of Mount Airy, Virginia, died at home after a stroke. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at St. Paul Church of the Brethren with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife Amelia Leftwich, four sons, five daughters, a sister, and pallbearers from the Payne and Willard families.

Welfare Expenses Up By Three Thousand In Surry County

Pilot Mountain Hires Third Full Time Officer

Deputy Sheriff Bill Lowe and ATU Agent Maywood Weddle captured a liquor still Saturday at noon on the old Calloway farm in Stewarts Creek Township Round Peak area. No arrests were made. The 60 gallon weed still and 50 gallon double and other apparatus were found.
