Henry McCraw 68 a farmer and pig dealer from the State Line area was released on $1,000 bond after being charged with assault with a deadly weapon in the shooting of Odell Smith 23 at Hauser Cash Store around 2 p m Witnesses say McCraw fired after a scuffle when Smith allegedly slapped him McCraw claims the gun discharged accidentally while deterring Smith Police have a warrant for Smith for assault and he is in hospital with a left shoulder wound from the 32 caliber pistol

White Plains Girl Killed by Vehicle
Mildred Erline Marshall 11 of White Plains was struck by a car driven by 17 year old Bobby Nichols as she left a Sunday School bus near her home after a revival at White Plains Baptist Church. She died at Martin Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held at White Plains Baptist Church.

March Draft Notice Sent to 15 Youths
The Surry draft board at Dobson received an induction call for 11 men to report on March 5. This smallest call in months follows 40 induction orders last month to Charlotte for service. Of those, three were rejected and 11 accepted by the U S Marines, the largest group to date.

Youths Arrested For Hit And Run Driving Drunk
Police report three young men were arrested for hit and run and drunken driving. Carl Griffith Jr., 25, of Mount Airy, was jailed February 14 after hitting Eugene Caudle’s car on Hadley Street and charged with operating a car intoxicated hit and run and no operator's license. Troy Key, 21, of Pilot Mountain, was arrested for reckless driving and hit and run after striking Dexter Allen’s car near South and Virginia Street. Donald Hugh Stanley, 17, was arrested early Sunday for hit and run after hitting P. S. Rothrock and Gracie Williams cars on Pine Street and was charged with operating a car intoxicated. Police vow further action against fast driving by youths.

Prisoner Bond Release Hindered By Jammed Lock
Local bondsman J Earle Ramey arranged Herbert Baker to be released on bond but jail lock jammed. Officers tried key, crow bar, saw, and bolt clipper. Four men finally broke the lock and freed Baker after plastic comb pieces blocked the mechanism. No fire occurred and the cause was traced to debris inside the lock.

Wayne Joyce of near Westfield sits in Stokes County jail without bond on a criminal assault charge involving a 14 to 17 year old Mount Airy girl.
