The division has expanded access to clinics, aids cancer centers, and runs an educational drive to cut cancer deaths by a third in the coming decade. Walter Hightower, a 30 year old Black man, was executed in Raleigh last Friday by gas chamber for the knife murder of fellow convict Will Bunker at Wilkes County Prison Camp near Wilkesboro. Hightower had earlier received a life sentence in Guilford County for the 1939 murder of a Black woman.

Pvt George Childress Dies From Self Inflicted Gunshot
Private George A. Childress, 19, son of Mr and Mrs Beatrice Childress, died at his mother’s home from a gunshot wound just above the heart. He used a sawed off 22 rifle and had been despondent over enlistment and furlough. Coroner Dr J L Woltz ruled no inquest. Funeral held at home with Rev Reuben Payne, burial in Oskdale. Survived by mother three brothers and two sisters.
