Two new annexed areas bring Pizza Hut and wholesale firm
Mount Airy approves two newly annexed zones along highway 52 from Mayberry Mall. One area will host a Pizza Hut on a six acre tract owned by Cleve and Caleb Bennett, with a 200 foot frontage. The other area houses Thomas & Howard Co Inc a Salisbury wholesale distributor building a two story 10 050 square foot structure. Completion set for six weeks and 75 days respectively. The firm serves customers within a 50 mile radius.

Elderly Pedestrian Fatally Struck Near Mount Airy
The third road death in Surry County this year occurred Friday at 8 40 am five miles south of Mount Airy on old U S 52 near Needham's apartments. Edgar Lee Johnson 80 of Pilot Mountain died at Northern Surry Hospital Winston Salem after being struck while crossing the highway by a Dodge driven by Deborah Doby Chilton 22 of Pilot Mountain. No charges were filed as the investigation continues. Johnson's funeral was held Sunday at Faith and Gospel Church with burial at Skyline Memory Gardens. He left a wife three daughters four sons and two brothers.

Phillip Eugene Cranford 71 of Mount Airy died Thursday at Northern Surry Hospital. A retired Cranford Sheet Metal Co. owner and noted artist, he belonged to Central United Methodist Church, was a Mason and Shriner. Funeral services were held at Jones Chapel on the Hill with burial in Oakdale Cemetery. Survived by wife Marjoria Crawford two stepdaughters and two stepsons.
