Job McGee Injured in Richmond Area Car Crash
Job McGee, a Mount Airy resident and land surveyor, was seriously injured in a two car collision near Wellville Virginia. He is reported improving after three days unconscious due to a head injury. Other injured include Thomas Ray of Richmond and L C Bruce of Winston Salem.

Alf Thomas Appeals Seven-Year Term in Murder Case
Alf Thomas of Mount Holly is free on a $5,000 bond pending appeal to the state Supreme Court from a seven to nine year prison sentence imposed last Friday by Judge Wilson Warlick for second degree murder in the fatal shooting of Will Matthews. The appeal delays the sentence, with a late summer high court review anticipated. Paul Jenkins, Negro, was sent to Raleigh for a one-year involuntary manslaughter term in the accident that killed the Boone and Boyd boys while riding a bicycle on Willow Street. The civil term adjourned early as most cases were continued, prompting a bar-backed plan to strike unready April term cases to ease docket congestion.

Series Of Auto Crashes Claim 2 Lives In Week
Two Mount Airy men died in separate crashes over the past week. Bergen Clifton 24 died when his car left the Mount Airy Lowgap highway and plunged down a steep embankment. Joe Jeffries 19 nicknamed Booly died at Martin Memorial Hospital after a Blue Ridge Parkway crash that left him with a fractured neck and paralysis. Investigating officer Herman Ball of Mount Airy posted 2500 bond on manslaughter and drunken driving charges. The Jeffries crash involved four people including driver George Morris 18 and two passengers Kathleen and Katherine Jones 18, who sustained non life threatening injuries.

Mount Airy Highway Projects Seek Bannertown Bridge Route
State highway engineers and agents pursued two Mount Airy projects the Bannertown hill bridge over the Ararat river and a truck lane along South Street from Pancy Gap highway to South Main street. Bids for Bannertown hill close in Raleigh on March. The work includes a double width concrete bridge with sidewalks and nearby highway sections. Damages to a residential property were paid. WPA grading on the north end of South Street will begin next week to complete the truck lane. Right of way was secured this week and dirt for a fill near Lovill creek will come from the Burke property where the Taylor house once stood and will be razed. Both projects should finish in about five months.

The weekly Wednesday Mount Airy cattle sale mostly offered white faced Hereford cattle with prices from 4.25 to 8.15 per hundredweight. Heavier cattle over 1,000 pounds sold $7.80 to $8.15. 700 to 800 pounds brought 4.25 to 5.25. Hogs at 200 pounds sold from 6.25 to 8.00. Cows brought 36 to 55 and bulls 9.50 to 11.
