State Line House Burns To Ground Saturday Morn
A two story frame house on old US 52 near the state line burned to the ground about 3 a m Saturday. Franklin Volunteer Fire Department fought the blaze with three trucks and about 20 men. The upper story was alight when they arrived and over 3 500 gallons of water were used. Neighbors reported seeing the sky lit up. The owner, Rich Greenwood, was staying at a son’s home nearby and only a few first floor pieces of furniture were saved. Firemen were on scene about ninety minutes. Cause undetermined.

Eldora Man Found Dead In Field Near Pilot
Gurney Howard Sawyers aged 51 of Eldora was found dead in a field near a Pilot Mountain area service station. An investigation ruled the death as natural causes likely a heart attack. He is survived by his mother Sadie Sawyers wife and former Elon Hawks, a son, two brothers and three sisters.

Bond vote set for March 21 on Surry College plan
County commissioners held a public hearing on a proposed 500000 bond issue to finance a new community college in Surry County. Voters will decide March 21 with a 20 year repayment and up to four cents for operation. Registration opens Saturdays February 29 and March 7. Site chosen as 48 acre tract beside Surry Central High School near Dobson.

White Plains Grocer Robbed Three Suspects Held
A White Plains grocer, Robert Simpson, was robbed at his rural home about 9 20 p m Saturday night after being ordered to lie on wet ground. Police arrested Edward Bennett Jack Haley and Robert Fallin, all charged with armed robbery, after finding money and weapons at Haley and in a house search.

Lazarus Smith Rites Scheduled This Afternoon
Funeral services for Lazarus Smith of Ararat Virginia will be held this afternoon at 2 o clock at Willisiap Baptist Church. The Rev. David Hall Rev. Jesse Woodruff and Rev. W E Burrus will officiate. Smith died Saturday after a week-long hospital stay. He was a retired farmer born in Surry County to Lazarus and Lydia Smith. Surviving are his wife Mamie Chandler two sons Sugarus Jr and William Edward five daughters Cliften Utt Bern ie Cain and Larry Sawyers Masha Cliften of Mount Airy and others.
