Real Estate Exchange Operator Fractures Sunday Heart Attack
G H Stantliff of the National Real Estate Exchange suffered a severe heart attack Sunday afternoon while driving from his Pipers Gap road home to Mount Airy. He flagged down a passing car for help and was taken to Baptist Hospital Winston-Salem where he received oxygen therapy and remains under care with improving condition.

Henry Lee Gardner 64 of 513 Arch Street died at 1 15 a m Wednesday after years of arthritis. He worked with the Mount Airy Water Department and formerly with the North Carolina Granite Corporation. Born April 5 1890 in Surry County he was a son of William R and Betty Freeman Gardner. Funeral services 2 30 p m Thursday at Grace Moravian Church were conducted by Rev. Robert Jobst and Rev. F J Burroughs. Burial in Oakdale Cemetery. He leaves a wife Ruth Johnson two sons James Gardner Havelock and Henry Lee Gardner Jr Mount Airy two daughters Mrs E F Patterson Mount Airy and Mrs P H Bass Jr Winston-Salem nine grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.

Mount Airy’s Junior Chamber of Commerce outlines Heart Sunday activities for this Sunday from 1 to 3 PM. About ninety Jaycees will canvass Mount Airy and nearby areas, divided into sections under captains, to raise contributions for the Heart Fund. Ten-year-old pilot trainee injured in Pilot Mountain crash
A 10-year-old Pilot Mountain boy, Billy Bryant, suffered a fractured leg and foot when struck by a car driven by Edith Boyles. Another teacher, Mrs. Shore, had minor injuries. The collision occurred on highway 52 near Ernest Inman's store. The boy was taken to Winston-Salem hospital, and no charges were filed.

City Needs Blood Quota to Keep Bloodmobile Service
Mount Airy faces potential loss of the Bloodmobile program if residents do not meet the quota. After 84 pints in November and 39 in December the drive aims for 125 pints today at Central Methodist Church from 10 30 a m to 4 30 p m. Jaycees and Red Cross urge donations with transportation provided and note donating a pint takes about 15 minutes.

Claude Bates Is Given Road Term For Assault
Claude Bates was sentenced to 18 months on the roads after a Surry County jury found him guilty in Superior Court at Dobson. He was charged with assaulting Thomas Ervin Butcher with a knife on June 13, injuring him with 154 stitches after a fight over a gun. Bates claimed self defense saying Butcher attacked him first.

Jury Finds The Guilty Of Narcotics Violations
Representatives of the North Carolina Granite Corporation employees at Flat Rock will meet next Friday with a state employment official to determine unemployment compensation eligibility after a two week work stoppage. The hearing will be at 11 30 a m in City Hall and involves about 300 workers, 140 of whom are union members.

The local post office banks and government offices in Mount Airy will close Tuesday for George Washington's birthday. Postmaster Thomas B. Ashby said no city or rural mail will be delivered, but parcel post, general delivery, and stamp window service will run during specified morning and afternoon hours.

Two Clifton brothers of Route 4 Clifton city serve in the US Air Force. Ae Roger Clifton is stationed in Albuquerque New Mexico receiving secret service instructions after training in Tooele Utah and service in Korea. Ae Roy Clifton entered in February 1954 trained at Keesler Mississippi for 23 weeks in electronic fundamentals and 13 weeks in air borne radio and radar maintenance. He is on an 18 day delay with his wife Jackie Coe before reporting to the Fifth Air Force in Japan and has been promoted to his present rank.

Mount Airy narcotics case yields long prison terms
In Surry County Superior Court, Cordell MccPeak of Jacksonville Florida Leland Campbell of Bowling Green Kentucky and James Ray Hemmings of the Flat Rock area were found guilty or not guilty on charges of narcotics violations and related offenses. McPeak and Campbell received 15 year terms for burglary tools and five years for narcotics to run concurrently. Hemmings was convicted only on narcotics charges and sentenced to three years. All three appealed to the State Supreme Court.
