Mount Airy’s Oldest Man Celebrates 92nd Birthday
W C Matthews of 124 Korner Street Mount Airy celebrated his 92nd birthday last Friday He was born in 1857 in Stokes County to Jackson and Martha Matthews He has lived under 18 presidents and outlived all his children except one daughter Mrs S J Mayes He spent 18 years in Washington Montana and California and first saw an automobile in Montana He once ran a Mount Airy grocery for 21 years The store burned during a Planters Warehouse fire He has a brother M J Matthews in Pilot Mountain and a sister about 80 He attended a Westfield one room school taught by Ellen Minthorn Hoover’s mother He suffered a stroke about a year ago but has since recovered and now finds reading difficult.

Claudeville Virginia native Miss Mary Alice Arrington has been chosen to represent Martin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in the Miss North Carolina Student Nurse of 1949 contest. She led a field of four candidates, with runners up Miss Mary Catherine Joyce, Miss Opal White, and Miss Doris Atkinson. The district winner advances to finals in Raleigh on March 16 after district competition in District 2.

Mrs. Judy Laffoon Bunker of White Plains age 82 died at Martin Memorial Hospital at 11 p m Monday shortly after arrival. Born August 18 1867 in Surry County daughter of Hardin and Sallie Laffoon she was widow of William O. Bunker son of Eng Bunker of Siamese twins fame. Funeral held 2 p m at White Plains Baptist Church with Rev Delmar Hodges and Elder Jesse Dunbar officiating burial in church cemetery. Survived by seven sons Byron White Plains Robert Winston-Salem Napoleon Winston-Salem area Hardin and Otto Petersburg Va Oliver Mebane Dennis Apex two daughters Mia Edwards Mount Airy and Mrs Caesar Stone Loris 3 NC 48 grandchildren six great grandchildren and one sister Mrs Pate Nichols of Toast.

New Airport Manager in Mount Airy Is Fugitive From Ohio
James McBride 35 new manager of Mount Airy Flying Service at Franklin Heights was held on 1000 bond to face Recorder's Court on March 8 to explain why he will not waive extradition to Ohio. Dayton police say McBride is wanted for obtaining money under false pretenses near 2000 with possible additional warrants totaling 40000 to 50000. He refused to waive extradition and said he would answer in court. He denied the charge and said he bought four airplanes and runs a training school at the airport.

Clyde Goad Named Second Lieutenant In National Guard

Dave Gallaway May Get Eyesight Again
Members of the Mount Airy Lions Club carried Dave Gallaway to Winston-Salem for an eye specialist to decide if he can undergo an operation and possibly regain his eyesight. Gallaway, blind about 20 years, was seen on the Granite City streets led by a small boy after an accident at Mrs. Martin Bennett’s basement. The Lions Club, with Janis Combs heading the blind committee, would pay for an expensive operation at Johns Hopkins Hospital if doctors say it can restore his sight.
