Red Cross Expands Armed Forces Home Service in 1943
The Surry County American Red Cross Home Service Committee logged about 4 000 cases in 1943 averaging over 11 per day. With 5 000 local servicemen, 80 percent of their families received help including illness contact, home issues, allotments, benefits claims, and welfare reports. Mrs Emma Ausborne 78 widow died after severe burns from a clothing fire possibly caused by a 5 cent matches explosion at her son Sanford Ausbornes Hadley Street home. Daughter in law suffered burns while smothering flames. Funeral held at Presbyterian Church with Rev Palton Lytle. Survived by three sons three daughters 27 grandchildren six great grandchildren and three brothers.
