The February term of Surry Superior Court reduced the docket to about 100 cases for the April term after disposing of murder and embezzlement counts. Defendants faced fixed penalties for liquor, prohibition, and assault cases, with several sent to roads, fines, or suspended sentences.
County Treasurer B F Folger reports to the State Government Commission on Surry County finances. Bonds outstanding total 1 137 000 with 30 000 short term notes left and 95 000 paid off in two years. Funds were used to cover teachers payroll when tax revenue lagged.
North Carolina Corporation Commission denied the Atlantic and Yadkin Railroad’s request to abandon passenger and mail service from Sanford to Mount Airy. It allowed motor car substitutes if double daily schedules are provided within 30 to 60 days, signaling a shift toward lighter, faster service and possible electrification in the future. The ruling aims to preserve service and spur competition with buses while avoiding outright abandonment.
Geo. R. Berryman the Raleigh architect visited the city Monday and met with postmaster J. B. Sparger to discuss the new post office building on Renfro Hill. He is the department chosen architect and hopes to have plans ready for bids soon.
Mr. Roohs Pyron manager of Klondike farm near Elkin is seriously ill after a heart attack en route to a Hartford cattle show. He was hospitalized in Hartford and his condition remains serious. Pyron is noted as a leading livestock breeder and his illness grieves a large circle of friends.
State and federal revenue agents will be at the Blue Ridge Hotel on February 23 24 and 25 to help residents file income tax returns. J Rousseau will represent the state and C M Jones the federal department. Both have assisted taxpayers in the area for several years.
Contractor Matt Hines started remodeling the tele phone building on South Main Street this week. The first floor will house company offices, telephone booths, and public waiting rooms. A new front-line setback will align with Banner buildings later, creating a straight line from Jackson Bros. to Pine Street.
More than 45 cases disposed in Recorder's court after a two week recess at Dobson. Most were liquor law violations. defendants confessed drunken driving or intoxication. Ed Willard held for shooting deputy C. J. Wilson. Dowell jailed 30 days for transport. Smith fined 200 to Forest and 50. Creed and Galyean fined 50 each for liquor.
B F Seagraves of Winston-Salem arrived last Friday to join Mount Airy Shoe Store as an experienced shoe man. John H Midkiff, the owner, has bought a new spring line featuring Brown-bilt shoes and oxfords to be displayed soon.
Andrew Morehand a five year old colored boy swung on a wagon axle along the street. He attempted to steady himself and his left leg became entangled in the wheel. The wheel revolved and threw him to the ground breaking his leg.
Capt Z T Smith of this city will celebrate his 85th birthday Friday Feb 19 with a supper at his home attended by his children and several grandchildren. His daughter Mrs James Dunn and Mr Dunn of Winston Salem are expected to visit. He remains active in real estate and business, walking to the post office and serving as a longtime Confederate soldier and county pension board member.
Frank Kirkman son of Mrs J W Kirkman of Sheltontown broke his arm Friday while playing on the school grounds. He was brought to this city for treatment and the injury received attention.
County Welfare Officer John W. Comer has four girls aged eight six four and two and a boy 18 months in his care. They are with the Salvation Army but are to be placed in good homes as soon as possible under welfare law. The children were taken from their mothers and are in county jail on criminal charges.
Miss Cordelia Johnson of the school faculty entered Martin Hospital Wednesday afternoon as a patient for medical care.
E M Linville lies critically ill in a Raleigh hospital after being moved from a Winston-Salem facility. The Mount Airy community holds him in high esteem and public concern has grown since his health began to fail.
Deputies J. E. Trulove and M. C. Shackleford traced liquor production in Siloam township along the Ararat river. A cedar planted in a sand bar betrayed an underground 12 by 12 foot room with a dugout chamber and tunnel to the river, housing a steam still and cooling water well. The hideout was destroyed and no arrests were made.
Mr. Ed Davis owner of Beech Falls Dairy reports a milk test of two cows. Trixie a Holstein eight years old produced 1802 pounds for 31 days and Raze a three year old Holstein with her first calf produced 1168.25 pounds in the same period.
