Fires destroy home and filling station in quarry area
Two fires in the quarry neighborhood damaged Irvin Ward's home and Worth Mahone's filling station. Ward's house burned Sunday afternoon while he and his child were away. insurance covered the loss. Mahone's building burned last night with only a small amount of contents.

Car Flips After Mount Airy to Dobson Crash Involving Wytheville Dealers
Messrs. Pierce Bowman and Walter Turner of Wytheville Va stock dealers and Mr Atkins of the area escaped serious harm after their car collided with a truck driven by Mr Robinson on the Mount Airy to Dobson highway Tuesday afternoon. The truck swerved to miss pedestrians causing the car to overturn several times over a bank. Turner's head buried in mud and water. all three men were shaken and bruised with Atkins suffering cuts. Turner, though more severely hurt, was able to be out this morning.

In Miami on February 15 President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt escaped unharmed after a gunman fired five shots toward his party. Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago was seriously wounded along with four other bystanders including Mrs. Gill and William Sinnott. The attacker identified as Joe Zingara was captured and said I kill Presidents. The incident occurred as Roosevelt had just spoken in Bayfront Park and aides rushed him to a hospital yacht.

Survey Shows Weight Issues Among County Schoolchildren

Britt and staff of county schools found 2,880 first five grades with 479 percent or more underweight, highest in rural fourth grades at 24 percent and combined rate 16.6 percent.
