Mother Of Seven Arrested On School Law
A mother of seven, Mrs. Fannie Mae Pruett of Mount Airy, was arrested by Surry County officers at 4 25 p m on charges of violating the North Carolina Public School Law. Deputies Lowe and Venable took her into custody. she reportedly failed to keep her children regularly in any authorized school for September October November and January. She was released on 50 bond to care for her children as her home had burned the previous Sunday destroying furniture and belongings.

Five Arrested in Branch Death Homicide Case
Sheriff Nea l Thompson says five people including two men, two women and a teen were arrested in the ambush killing of John Allen Branch a 58 year old tenant farmer from Tom's Creek Surry County. The suspects face homicide and accessory charges with no bond set.
Fugitive Frank Prater Arrested After Foot Chase
Frank Prater, 35, of Mount Airy, was arrested by Deputies Roy Smith and Barney Venable on a Virginia fugitive warrant. Martinsville officers say he robbed the White Truck Stop last July, taking $700 to $900. Prater fled during a traffic stop and was captured after a long chase near Poole's Orchard. He requested transport to Martinsville and is held in jail on $3,000 bond.

Two Mount Airy Men Arrested in Chain Saw Theft Case
Mount Airy police arrested Eugene Gunnell 38 and Rufus Caudle 34 on larceny and receiving stolen property charges after a six week investigation into a chain saw theft from Merritt Hardware. A third man, Ed Meredith, has a warrant filed and will be served after finishing a Danbury road term.

Youth Caught Speeding 90 MPH by Patrol in Mount Airy
State Patrolman W Z Blankenship chased Joxie Grey Gammons a 17 year old of Mount Airy route 1 along Derby Cot tage and Highway 52 A clocking 90 miles per hour. Gammons turned his headlights off to evade the patrol but kept meting cars. He was charged with reckless driving and speeding.
