Clyde Fleming Dies in Truck Car Crash North of Mount Airy
Clyde Fleming 24 of Mount Airy died about 4 20 p m Saturday when his car collided with a tractor trailer two miles north of the Virginia line on Fancy Gap Highway. Truck driver Jack Slate 34 suffered minor injuries. A manslaughter charge was filed against Slate. Fleming, a Cardel Supply employee, served in the Air Force and was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Monday at Pauls Creek Baptist Church near Cana Va.

Red Cross Meeting Held In Raleigh
Surry County Red Cross Chapter attended a Raleigh meeting to launch the 1955 campaign. About 150 leaders gathered at the Sir Walter Hotel as Governor Hodges credited the Red Cross with half a million dollars in Hazel relief and Dr. Frank P. Graham spoke on the campaign’s global ongoing work.

Carter High Bidder Tops Baptist Land Sale in Surry County
A. B. Carter, local attorney, was high bidder at the sale of 540 acres in Surry County owned by the Baptist Orphanage at Thomasville. The Chris Bunker land, sold under a deed of trust, was purchased earlier by Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Trent and Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Morse of Stuart Virginia. Carter bid $35,000, with the bid to remain open 10 days before sale.

Murder Narcotics and Manslaughter Cases Lead Superior Court Docket
The Dobson term includes the murder case of Mrs. Lelia Thomas charged with shooting her husband Elwood Thomas on March 6 1954. Local Trucker Injured In New Mexico
Lee Roy Morrison of Newport News Virginia was injured Monday night February 7 in a traffic accident at Kilgore Bridge nine miles west of Tucumcari New Mexico. The semi trailer jackknifed and crashed into the bridge abutment with the trailer ending in the creek bed. Morrison remained hospitalized with shoulder and chest injuries and was to be flown home later this week. He lived with the Stevens family before moving to Newport News and is Benton Morrison’s brother.

John P. Frank of North Carolina Granite Corp said he met with Monroe Bateman of Granite Cutters International Association and reaffirmed a two and a half cent hourly raise for quarry cutters at Flat Rock. The union seeks seven and a half cents, and a Saturday YMCA meeting did not yield a vote. 800 laborers struck February 3 after failed talks by the January 31 deadline. 140 of 300 workers are union members.
