Mount Airy prepares a new Community Center on Pines and Renfro Streets to be ready by mid March. The Mount Airy YMCA will operate the center with J F Yokley as president and C W Cockrell named general secretary. Board officers include William Merritt, J H Crossingham, D C Lewis, and R D George.

Pvt Samuel Carlise Hamlin of Dobson route 2 died in Korea on November 21 1961 at age 21 after serving from 1951 He was born September 28 1930 and graduated Dobson High School in 1949 Funeral services are Sunday at 2 pm at Salem Baptist Church with full military rites by Mount Airy National Guard VFW and American Legion Burial at the church cemetery He is survived by his parents a brother Kerney E Hamlin and two sisters Delpha Arlen and Hazel Marie Hamlin with grandmothers Mrs Ella Stanley Draughn and Mrs Fannie Wood Hamlin The body will be carried to his parents home Saturday morning

Mount Airy police will limit enforcement to within city limits after a Superior Court verdict in Dobson. Judge Rudisill fined Jim Stanley for speeding in town and ruled Sgt. Simmons had no right to arrest out of town. Chief Monte W. Boone announced the change, directing that outside duties are sheriff or township responsibility.

Lions Club to Sponsor Granite City Horse Show Soon
Mount Airy Lions Club president Roy Hutchens announced the club will again sponsor the Horse Show in Surry County. The event is set for May 23 and 24 at Veterans Memorial Park in front of the grandstand with prominent southern horses displayed and participating. Paul Calloway and Earl Watson chair the committee. A Fordson tractor prize is planned for the attendant, with cash alternative offered if not preferred.

Three In Family Hurt In Car Plunge Down Hill
Three members of a single family were injured when their car went off a hill and plunged into an old mill race eight miles southwest of here on Monday night. Mrs Jennie Reynolds age 36 suffered a broken arm and leg lacerations, Early Stewart Reynolds age 36 had a knee laceration, and J C Roosevelt Reynolds age 15 sustained facial and head lacerations. A daughter Mary Jane Reynolds reportedly drove the car and was uninjured. The injured were taken to Martin Memorial Hospital.

Grand Jury Charges Marshall With Murder in Dobson
A grand jury of 16 including the foreman returned a true bill against Jesse Marshall of White Plains for the murder of William Thomas on February 1. The case is continued to the April term. Marshall is free on 8000 bond. The jury also charged Spencer Lawson with murder, to be tried next term. William R. Golding was found guilty of manslaughter in the White Plains wreck last fall and given two months suspended five years on good behavior and court costs. Numerous other cases before Judge J. C. Rudisill resulted in suspensions, fines, or terms for offenses including assault, larceny, non-support, and reckless driving.

Mount Airy businessman Joe R. Fowler Jr has been named organizer for the Central District of The Young Democratic Clubs of North Carolina. W W Staton Sanford president of the state YDC announced Fowler 26 will work with YDC presidents in the piedmont section to boost active interest in the clubs during the election year. Fowler a Mount Airy High School and UNC and Cornell College alumnus and Navy World War II veteran, has served as vice president of the Surry VDC and two years as president of Surry County clubs.
