Sgt. Ben K. Graves son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo Graves arrived in the city Sunday after service in the Army. He served in Japan and other Pacific fronts and was with occupation forces in the area.
Three sons of Mr. and Mrs. 8. R. Scott have completed 30 months of service including overseas duty in Saipan and Okinawa. Mottle T. Scott served in the Pacific with an anti aircraft unit.
The record lists Sgt. Jack Wyrick honorably discharged from the Army after 33 months of service at Port Bragg. T-5 John Neil and wife Carolyn Furia of Trinidad Colorado visit family as Neil plans to settle locally after discharge. Several others, including Sec. Francis Andrew arriving Seattle from Japan and Lieut. Charles Mayberry on 10 day leave, are noted with family connections and plans. Additional discharges include Jesse F. Nichols at Fort Bragg after 26 months and Sgt. Ben H. O Neal with a year overseas, detailing family ties and homecomings.
W. W. Ashburn 61 died Sunday at his son’s home in Winston-Salem after years of declining health. A native of Shoals township he moved to Winston-Salem years ago and worked in the grocery trade. Survived by his widow a daughter and a son.
Mr and Mrs Roger Patterson announce their son Technical Sergeant Roger Patterson has been discharged after 42 months in the U S Army with 19 months in Panama He previously worked at Renfro Hosiery Mills and is now connected with Cockerhams Flower Shop and Greenhouses on South Main Street in Punconema He is the son of Sheriff and Mrs Sam Patterson.
Tec 4 Frank K. Brintle, son of Jacob and the late Pearl Nichols Brintle of Route 4, received an honorable discharge this month after overseas service from October 1944 with the 6th Armored Division 69th Tank Battalion. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge Rhineland and Central Germany, participated in the liberation of Buchenwald in April 1945, and held radio installation inspection duties. He later studied in England at Shrivenham American University and plans to continue radio engineering work. He is entitled to multiple medals including the Good Conduct Medal with three battle stars the European Theater Medal the American Defense Ribbon the Victory Ribbon and unit and foreign citations.
Surry native S M Mann 79 of Rural Retreat Virginia died Friday of last week. He was twice married first to Roxie Caudle of Johnson City Tennessee and then to Sallie Hale of Elk Creek Virginia. Surviving relatives include his second wife Garnet Mann and a son and daughter from his first marriage. Funeral held at China Grove Sunday at 2 PM with local attendees from the city.
Miss Marjorie Yates Yokley daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Bruce Yokley has been chosen as a candidate for student elections at the college on the basis of scholarship leadership and popularity Civic Association elections will be officially opened March 1.
Outstanding ladies of Surry attended the Parm Bureau Convention in Winston-Salem last week with about 1200 in the state delegation. Prominent Surry women listed include Mrs H Atkinson and Mrs W H Hardy of Siloam, Mrs P N Taylor White Plains, Mrs F P Layne Route 2 Dobson, Mrs T F Heamer Route 2 Dobson, Mrs R W Shinault Route 1 Dobson, Mrs Pred Polger Mount Airy, Mrs J 4 Banner Mount Airy, Orase P Brown and Mrs D C Davenport of Mount Airy.
The Surry County Guilford College Alumni Association and guests met at the Blue Ridge Hotel on February 7 with about sixty faculty and students present. Dr. Clyde Milner delivered a speech on the state of American higher education while Miss Nancy Miller of Siloam was named May Queen. Officers elected include President Marvin Shore and Secretary Sara Davis Phillips.
P N Taylor of White Plains was elected to the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation Board of Directors at the Winston-Salem convention. He is the first director from Surry County and far western tobacco grower on the board. Taylor also served as secretary to the Edward A O Neal Club which drives membership. last fall he recruited 90 members for the Surry Farm Bureau, pushing totals over 1000.
Relatives from multiple states and towns gathered for the funeral of Mrs. F. B. Holcomb. Attendees included Mrs. Perdita Campbell and daughter Vernet Sharpe of Gibsonville, along with Mr. and Mrs. Joe W. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Hines, Mrs. T. M. Ed, Mrs. R. E. Pittman of Candor, and others from Kingsport Tennessee to Greensboro North Carolina.
The Mount Airy Merchants Association announces its annual dinner meeting at the Blue Ridge. Tickets required for admission will be secured in advance.
Mr and Mrs Johnnie Cruise rent the apartment in the Mrs Holcomb house on Pine Street and plan to move about March 1. He has been discharged from the service and is now employed at Lamm Drug Store.
Mrs. Thomas Fletcher, one of the war brides arriving from Britain, was greeted by her husband and bought her first new shoes in five years. She said British shops offered only wooden-soled pairs and limited stock, with lines forming until goods were sold out.
W. E. Merritt Sr and his family, who have spent the winter in Florida, will return Friday. J. Merritt suffered a severe cold and rode by train from Sanford to Mount Airy, then was taken by ambulance to his home.
The First Baptist Church of Mount Airy held a February 10 service to honor returned service members and the community. Red carnations greeted attendees, white gladioli memorialized the missing, and Rev. R K Redwine with Lucian P. Wrenn and H M. Finch gave speeches. About 400 people attended the service and reception with music from the men’s chorus and decorated social rooms serving punch and cake.
Word comes from Mount Airy of the death Sunday of Freeman Toler in Missouri where he lived several months. He had been connected with the Allen Excelsior plant in Mount Airy. Surviving are his widow and his brother F. G. Toler of Asheboro.
Sam T. Crockett died after a life tied to horse shows in Virginia and the Carolinas. Survivors include his wife a son and three daughters. Mr and Mrs Louis Talbert of this city attended the funeral from Mount Alry.
Geo K Snow resumes law work effective March 1 after four years away serving in government war agencies. He will reopen a private office in Salem and resume his law practice with his son assisting as rent control adviser.

Wiley Wilford Thomas 75 longtime Mount Airy grocer and civic figure died at his North Main street home Sunday at 9 A M. He moved to Mount Airy in 1890 and served on the County Commissioners board and the Central Methodist Church board of Stewards. He married Bernice Bryant in 1904 and left five daughters, three living, plus one grandchild. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Oakdale Cemetery.
A series of hospital notices reports surgical and medical patients including Mrs. Frank Gordon Pinnacle and Jack C. Warren. Birth announcements note a daughter for Mr. and Mrs. Rastus Vaughn Westfield on Feb 13 and a son for Mr. and Mrs. William Price Pilot Mountain. Several residents from Cana Ararat Meadows of Dan and Dobson are listed as patients, with multiple Feb 7 to Feb 13 dates.
Mrs B H Kochiutcky returned to her home in this city after a week away visiting Wanatae and New Orleans. She traveled by air to the Republic of Sunteenate and Canton Anette ED was en route home, arriving Friday.
The late Mrs. Ella G. Holcomb's will creates the James Greenwood Memorial Educational Fund to aid descendants at Wake Forest or Meredith College. All estate assets, about 45000 dollars in stocks, bonds and Pine Street property, are converted to bonds for income used for education. principal remains intact under trustees appointed by the Clerk of the Court, with five year cycles and annual reports. Executives named are W. E. Woodruff W. A. Jackson and W. M. Johnson.
The North Main P T A observed Founders Day on Tuesday February 12 at 7 30 pm in the school. Mrs Robert Perkins president presided with devotionals led by Mrs H P Mills and a sketch of the parent association origin by Mrs Otis Oliver. The organization traces to the National Congress of Mothers founded by Phoebe Apperson and Alice Birney. A memorial to Mrs Birney stands in Marietta Georgia with a walkway of stones from states including a Mount Airy granite stone donated by J D Sargent of North Carolina. The local group is 22 years old with seventeen presidents and a note on past speakers and attendees.
Major Thomas W. Firebee, 26, of Mocksville, a member of the famed Atomic Bomb group, is slated to take part in the bomb drop on ships at Bikini Atoll. The operation, planned for May and July, was announced by the War Department in Washington.
Federal Revenue Department agents will aid taxpayers in filing income tax returns at Mount Airy post office second floor 9 to 6 March 5 to March 15 with additional sessions March 1 and 4 at the Dobson courthouse. State revenue agents will be in Mount Airy around the same time to collect state income tax reports with a March 15 deadline.
Charles E. Ader of the United States Moravian Church will speak at Grace Moravian Church during the evening service next Sunday at 7 30. Sheriff Sam Patterson may attend and introduce the speaker. The talk will cover liquor traffic in North Carolina and its havoc, urging all ages to attend.
John Henry Blalock elected secretary treasurer of the American Legion group. R. B. Davis heads a committee to select a lot and plan for a Legion Post building, assisted by Lieut. Col. B. N. Graham and N. C. Owen.
Raleigh director Wiley M. Pickens of the North Carolina Veterans' Commission said local medical and hospital care for veterans with service connected disabilities will be authorized by the Veterans Administration. The program, soon in effect, will make North Carolina the second state to operate under it and will supplement VA chapel and medical service. Veterans may not elect treatment or hospitalization through a VA installation.
