Surry County Rural Routes Are Changed
Surry County plans changes to rural routes effective February 16 and March 1 moving 12 miles from Mount Airy RFD 1 to Pilot Mountain RFD 2 and four miles to RFD 1. Mount Airy route 6 will be stopped and a shift will send part of route one to route three. Five carriers remain in Mount Airy. the substitute carrier will be discontinued. Ararat mail now arrives by Star Route from Greensboro, with the rural carrier to depart after 10 A.M. The March 1 changes place Pilot Mountain Rural Carrier RFD in charge of Ararat mail, likely ending Star Route service there. Ararat gains earlier delivery around 8 A.M.

State To Contract Yadkin River Bridge
The state highway commission will open bids on Feb. 27 for a bridge and railroad overpass at Crutchfield to span the Yadkin River and cross the Southern railroad toward North Wilkesboro. The three mile route was paved last summer. the bridge will complete the route and ease traffic between Mount Airy and Winston-Salem.

Veteran of War Between the States Dies at 93
John W. Phillips a retired farmer and Civil War veteran died at his Mount Airy home aged 93. He joined the Southern army at 14 and served until surrender. Survived by four sons two daughters 44 grandchildren 69 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements pending.

High Winds Cause Widespread Damage in Mount Airy
On Valentine Day the town faced its heaviest wind in years with gusts up to 60 mph and average speeds around 30 mph for 26 hours. Losses near 56000 were reported by builders and insurers as roofs, signs, trees, and windows were damaged. a child was saved from a collapsed Hamburg Street home after a stove pipe fell.

D C Butner a prominent Shoals township farmer died in Baptist Hospital Winston-Salem after an illness of several months. He lived alone and was found unconscious by a neighbor who had cared for him. He left a note directing burial beside his sister in Bethlehem.
