Three Mount Airy Men Hurt in Car Collision
Three Mount Airy men Ralph Lemones John Mahone and Joe Haymore were injured when two cars collided on Boone's Hill between Mount Airy and Winston-Salem. Mahone sustained head injuries Lemones head injuries and Haymore facial injuries with arm damage. Semones faced reckless driving charges with $200 bond.

Walter Glenn Griffith and his brother Lawrence were arrested at Spaugh Street on Wednesday afternoon after officers found five gallons of liquor, many fruit jars and bottles. M. S. Nichols known as Munce Nichols, bed-stricken for two weeks, was taken by ambulance to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem on Sunday under doctors orders. Hospital report Thursday morning noted little improvement and possible head surgery may be needed in the coming days. He became ill while shoveling snow, fainted and fell on ice injuring his neck, then endured severe headaches.

Former Mount Airy Teacher Involved In Durham Shooting
Miss Minnie Chandler, former Surry County teacher who worked in Mount Airy Dobson and Copeland, witnessed a bandit shot by a Negro mail clerk during a robbery attempt in Durham. The assailant died shortly after. Chandler had taught seventh grade at North Main School before moving to Durham in 1943. She lived with Mrs. Matt Hines on North Main Street during her Durham years. The Durham Herald recounts the one minute drama ending with a 45 caliber bullet.

Jim Tilley operator of a Westfield feed mill was seriously injured late Monday when caught in a fast rotating shaft. He was oiling machinery in the basement when a set screw tore his clothing and wound him against the shaft causing severe bruises cuts and burns.
