Merchants in Mount Airy join the two day Dollar Days festival on February 16 and 17. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. Friday with many ads in The News detailing special bargains. The Granite City hosts the semiannual sale attracting locals and out-of-town shoppers.
The annual Dobson Birthday Ball will be held Friday night February 14 at the Woman's Club building. Johnny Thompson and his orchestra from Boone will be featured for dancing. A birthday supper pot luck style will start at six o'clock. Admission is forty cents per person or seventy five cents per couple. The dance script is one dollar per couple. Dancing begins at nine o'clock.
Mount Airy activities center on the Blue Ridge Hotel for a week of events. W. E. Merritt entertained the fire department to honor their response to a major fire that endangered Renfro Mills and local businesses. The dinner, with 25 attendees including Honorary Fireman John H. Poiger, featured a steak meal and a fire truck stationed outside. State NCJCC officials and Junior Chamber members attended later events at the hotel.
A Surry County jury found Alf Thomas of Mount Airy guilty of second degree murder for the fatal shooting of Will Matthews on a farm in Long Hill township. The judge will determine punishment, with range from two to 30 years, and Thomas remains in sheriff custody.
During the week must report to the sheriff for several offenders. Jalius Hodge Carl Davis and Clyde Phillips were fined 50 for operating a car while intoxicated with license revoked 12 months. Pete Mason paid 15 and costs for violating prohibition laws. Romey Eaton received 5 months on roads Cecil Jessup had a suspended sentence. Roscoe Eaton paid 50 fine and a three year road sentence suspension. Eaton must report to Sheriff Boyd last Saturday each month for three years. Civil court with Judge Warlick starts next Monday for two weeks.
J B Atkinson deputy Collector of Internal Revenue will be at the Blue Ridge Hotel February 17 18 19 to assist taxpayers in filling out income tax return blanks. All single persons and all married persons not living with husband or wife with income 800 or more and all married couples with joint income 2000 or more must file tax return blanks.
A wind driven blaze Saturday morning roared through an acre of Mount Airy business blocks between Virginia and Oak Streets. The Planters Warehouse and several sheds were total losses, with multiple stores damaged and livestock killed. Fire fought for six hours as officials called bystanders to witness the danger and crews contained the flames.
The Mount Airy celebration of the President's Birthday Ball will be held at the Blue Ridge Hotel with a Washington DC orchestra for dancing. Mayor John D. Thompson this year invites attendance.
The American Legion joins the defense program and urges World War II veterans to complete a national registration. Post leaders say participation is voluntary and no compulsory service is involved, with assistance offered to every ex serviceman in the area.
Twenty nine men from Surry County will be drafted to Fort Bragg on February 20 as the third call. Mount Airy sends 16 with 4 draftees and 12 volunteers. Dobson contributes 13 with one added by substitution. Charlie Joe Cook, order number 32, becomes the first draftee. A Negro is slated for March. B P F Folger of Dobson reports three female fox hounds missing after a fox chase in the Little Mountains Surry County toward the Yadkin River. Descriptions include one black white and tan saddle back one black with tan and spots and one white with lemon ears. Reward offered five dollars each. Notify Debson office.
The article notes a 31st anniversary observance by Boy Scouts in the city. It highlights their readiness to tackle dangerous or arduous tasks to prevent fires and praises the cooperation of Kenfro Hosiery Mille employees led by W. E. Merritt Jr for lending assistance.
Judge William York of Greensboro who founded the Juvenile Court will speak to the Kiwanis Club Friday evening. Dr. John L. Ashby heads the Underprivileged Child committee which reports juvenile crime in Mount Airy with 112 acts in four months including 27 burglaries 30 thefts 9 property injuries 41 citizen complaints and five auto thefts totaling an estimated $3 686 in stolen property.
Pete F Bondurant of this city left Priday for Port Bragg to join the Army Reserve Corps again serving as sergeant. He had worked for Duke Power Company and now answers the call to return to ranks.
The Jones Brother and Sprinkle, local fertilizer dealers, take over Robertsons Fertilizers agency from P. N. Taylor who has ended his fertilizer business after a recent fire and illness. Sales will be from the Farmer's Warehouse on Virginia Street with details in this issue. Taylor also issues a customer notice in THE NEWS.
Stock market report shows strong hog demand and higher prices with a range from 7.65 to 8.40 for hogs and 12.25 tops for calves. Cattle prices remain firm across classes with best cutters at 6.75 top. heifers average 17.50 to 25.00 per head. Bulls and other terms unclear.
Mrs. A. D. Polger brought her son Lon Polger Jr from Watts Hospital Durham after an appendicitis operation. He is convalescing at home and Mrs Polger attended the inauguration and stayed with her husband.
Fire destroyed the Hennis Motor Freight Lines office about five miles from Mount Airy on the Hillsville highway near the Carolina Virginia line. A short circuit on a neon sign sparked the blaze, fanned by a 45 mile gale, with discovery at 9 15 P M. Mount Airy firemen aided by The Grille and Boy Scouts fought spreading flames into fields and woods.
