Ice Jam On New River Text From Mount Airy Trip
Mount Airy citizens filmed a dramatic ice jam on New River above Fries dam near Galax. The river 12 miles above the dam is seven to eight feet thick with ice pushing into meadows and across fences. Bridges near Galax worry officials as melting ice could cause a massive jam. two movie cameras were used to document the scene.

Mrs. Lela Welch Injured In Fall At Guilford College
Mrs. Lela Welch slipped on ice in front of the Guilford College post office Monday morning and broke two bones in her left leg above the ankle. She was taken to Clinic Hospital in Greensboro where she is hospitalized. Welch, a city resident, has spent much time in Guilford recently with her mother Mrs Williams and sisters Mrs Davis assisting after the older woman underwent an appendix operation in November.

Debt Payment Service At First Baptist Church
An impression service at First Baptist Church will Sunday honor the complete elimination of church debt. Pastor Dr Walter L Johnson leads the debt campaign and notes $3200 on the parsonage and annex is cleared this Sunday. W S Monday and T F Butner oversaw fundraising with strong support over five years the church has paid about $15000 toward the debt. A large crowd is expected and the event marks full payment of construction costs. Caleb Wagner Held Without Bond in Alleged Murder Case
Caleb Wagner was ordered held without bond after a preliminary hearing before Magistrate R. K Mitchell. The 33 year old former fugitive faced an alleged murder charge for shooting Tom Marion in the back near the Robert Hall place after an argument. Wagner fled but was captured after a three week manhunt. another shooting case involving Carl Taylor was not heard. The February term of the Surry County Superior Court begins February 11.

Osborne Hawks Home Burned in Lambsburg Virginia
The old home of Mr. Osborne Hawks in Lambsburg Virginia burned Tuesday afternoon around four o clock. The residence, then occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Dixie Hawks and family and Mr. Hawks who is about 85, was damaged by a fire of unknown origin starting in a second floor room. Nothing from the second floor was saved though much first floor furniture was removed. The family plans to rent a small tenement until rebuilding. Insurance covered part of the loss. many old family heirlooms were destroyed.

Criminal Court Sets Reward Split In Delp Capture
Judge Horace Southerland orders reward money from the Delp case divided among five captors. Delp, convict in the killing of Police Posey Martin of Galax, Va., was arrested near North Wilkesboro after the Monday Dobson court session. Mount Airy Fire Department Marks 32nd Birthday
The Mount Airy Fire Department celebrated its 32nd anniversary on Saturday. Founder members included D. D Parks John Puller HB McCain Bud Brannock and others. Uncle Bud Brannock remains on duty every third night as a veteran chief engineer and has long been noted for horse training prowess with Reuben. He once trained horses for offers to work in other towns.
