Fire damages two Elkin shops in dawn blaze
A morning fire gutted the Elkin Barber Shop and Chappell Jewelers, damaging two nearby firms on the lower street level. The blaze, started before daybreak, trapped smoke and water damage across the block, with two upstairs residents escaping unharmed. Firefighters took about two hours to control the fire, with total damage yet undetermined. The building was owned by C. A. McNeill Sr. and George Hart.

George Fox Nichols 50 of Mount Airy route 4 died Saturday of a heart condition. Funeral at White Plains Friends Meeting House conducted by Rev. John Pipkin and Rev. Tommy Wagoner. Survived by wife Myrtle Eads Nichols four sons seven grandchildren three brothers two sisters and burial in the meeting house graveyard.

Man Charged After Deputy Raid On Colored Club
Acting on anonymous information, Deputy Jimmy Trevathan searched a Safey Level area clubhouse Saturday night and found three and 34 pints of liquor. Tomas J. Smith, 39, of Mount Airy route 6, was charged with violation of prohibition laws for possessing liquor with intent to sell.

Three Men Charged With Prohibition Violations
Deputy Jimmy Trevathan arrested three men in two cars early Sunday. Each man faced Violation of the prohibition laws after liquor was found in their vehicles. Man charged with first degree burglary after teen girls intrusion
Mount Airy police arrested Ruben Bryan Gelding, 65, of a nearby apartment, after he allegedly entered a sixteen year old girl's room at a Franklin Street apartment. The girl fled screaming. Gelding was intoxicated and detained at Mount Airy jail on a capital burglary charge with bond set at $7,500.

Charges Added in P. Q. Thefts In Mount Airy Youth Confesses
Mount Airy youth Robert Wray Jr admitted to forging and cashing checks stolen from Toast Post Office during Christmas week and January. He described three thefts totaling 86 and named the locations Riverside Grocery Joseph-Brown Shoe Store and Apparel Outlet. He faces additional charges of breaking and entering and forgery, free on 1000 dollars bond awaiting hearing. Local police and postal authorities cooperated.
