Nighttime blaze devastates Orchard Gap packhouse
Early Wednesday a 240 foot apple packhouse at Orchard Gap above Mount Airy burned, inflicting about 100000 dollars in damages. Neighboring packhouses and 70 firefighters battled the fire through snow while Bowman plans to rebuild on the same site. The cause remains under investigation with electrical suspicion.

Youth Becomes County's First Snow Fatality
A Mount Airy area youth died in Baptist Hospital Winston-Salem after a January snow accident, becoming the county's first snow-related fatality. Jateh Pam Pitt aged 14, a Mount Airy High School junior, had been hospitalized since January 16 following a pickup truck skid in White Plains. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church Mount Airy with burial in Oakdale Cemetery.

Sixty eight Surry County young men were sent to Charlotte yesterday with 27 slated for induction and 31 for preliminary examinations before a return trip. Inductees align with February draft quotas to meet Vietnam era manpower needs.
