A countywide meeting of district representatives will be held at J F Yakley’s home to establish an executive council. Miss Punderburke, a former executive secretary of Girl Scouting in Gastonia North Carolina, will assist in forming new troops and lead in training. She has music training and education from multiple institutions and extensive Girl Scout leadership experience.
An Army Band from the Greensboro camp toured Su County last Friday for the 4th War Bond Drive. They performed at Pilot Mountain Copeland and Rockford Street School Elkin Dobson and at the Chatham Manufacturing plant. The unit was hosted in local homes and held a concert at Rockford Street School after parading through the Mill district.
The local Red Cross chapter reports major efforts in home nursing led by Mrs. Paul Brown and Miss Mary Franklin Graves. About 300 women completed the course across 15 classes in Mount Airy and nearby towns.
The Bank of Pilot Mountain and the Partners Bank reported on the 4th War Loan drive with a bond sale of 246,300 dollars in the local section. Allocations went to Cook 3025, Eldora 1925, Westfield 18000, Shoals 12250, Pilot Mountain 202100, and Stokes County 8000. Chairman J. F. Yokley cites E Bonds sales at 322,218 against a 646,900 county quota, urging individuals to buy 25 and 100 dollar bonds to help reach the goal.
Neal Thompson former Pilot Mountain tax collector and Mount Airy police member was elected county tax collector for Surry County and will head the Mount Airy office. He succeeds J Howard Hooker who resigned to join the State Revenue Department as a field agent. Change effective immediately.
The Sioux Falls Army radio school honor roll includes Pfc Carl J Stewart. He trained at Greensboro and was sent from there to Sioux Falls. he is the son of Mr and Mrs Henry Stewart of this city.
John Hollingsworth has been promoted to captain in the United States Marine Corps. He is stationed at the New River Marine Base after returning from overseas duty in the Pacific. He is a son of Mrs. J. C. Hollingsworth, married to Miss Rena Pendelton, and they have a son named Penny in this city.
Hon. Gregg Cherry of Gastonia spent two days in OF County as the Democratic hopeful for Governor. He faces Dr. Ralph McDerall of Winston-Salem and Chapel Hill in the June primary. Cherry traveled quietly, meeting many locals and discussing his long legislative service.
Three new members joined local wartime price and gasoline panels this week. The gasoline panel now includes W. H. Carter alongside O. K. Merritt as chairman and others. The price panel adds W. A. Poore and R. R. Jackson to a group led by D. L. Hiatt with regular Tuesday meetings. A February 18 meeting at 7 30 p m in the board office will brief dealers on price control for wearing apparel with Mrs. Timmons and Mrs. Polger present.
State and federal officers pursue two unknown robbers who attacked Aris Weddle at his home while posing as FBI agents. They stole 1,798 dollars in cash and 359 dollars in checks. Weddle was wounded but not seriously hurt. Casper Jones has been arrested in connection with the case on bond.
Franklin School will sponsor a War Bond Auction Sale Friday night in the school auditorium with entertainment features to boost the War Bond effort. Residents are urged to attend and help make the auction a success.
News comes of the death of Miss Jane Griffin of Wilson aunt of Mrs. C. C. Hale. Mr. and Mrs. Hale have been in Wilson after being called by the death of another aunt about two months ago. The two sisters were Mrs. Hale’s aunts and Jane Griffin had been ill since her sister died.
Federal government agents will be in Mount Airy the week of February 21 to help taxpayers prepare income and victory tax returns. They will quarter at the Blue Ridge and also be at Pilot Mountain town hall February 17 18 19 and at the Dobson courthouse March 1 2. Taxpayers are urged to bring all information needed to complete their returns.
George Worrell, brother of I. W. Worrell of this city, died Tuesday at his home in Snake Creek Virginia at about 72. He was a prosperous merchant and farmer, and is survived by his widow formerly Miss Branscomb, a son, and a daughter. Funeral at Snake Creek Primitive Baptist Church Friday at 2 p.m.
W H Holcomb will leave the last of the week on a business trip to Louisville Kentucky.
The automobile of Dr. R. K. Redwine was stolen from in front of his house Saturday night. The car was found parked six miles north of Mount Airy with its two front wheels and tires removed. Investigating officers have some clues but no arrests.
The New Community Baptist Church near Haystack, nine miles west of Mount Airy, officially formed on Sunday January 30. Rev. Charlie Jackson became pastor and Namon Cooke, Myrtle Cooke, Claude Newman, J. W. Lamb, and Namon Cooke were named officers and deacons. The group started with 15 members and plans to build a new house of worship.
Mrs H L Cothran arrived last week to visit Mr and Mrs W H Carter on Cherry street. Capt Cothran who is stationed at Fort Knox Ky accompanied his wife here for a short visit.
The Mount Airy draft board reports the last group of men examined for army induction. They are entitled to a minimum 21 days from notification before leaving for camp on February 29. Names listed include William Roscoe Hill, Ralph Arnold Wilson, Irvin Thomas Gant Posey, Sylvester Nichols, Luther Arnder, Oscar Harrison Beck.
The Mount Airy Fire Department hosted its annual banquet in the Masonic Temple dining room with Eastern Star serving a tempting menu. State Fire Marshal Sherwood Brockwell of Raleigh was guest speaker, joined by Mayor Thompson, City Council, Sheriff Patterson and the police, highway patrol, and city staff. John Witt gave the welcome, Brockwell spoke, and watch chains were awarded to D. G. Witt and Bud Brannock for 30 and 40 years of service. L. P. Wrenn presented the honors.
The fourth War Loan Drive nears its end with a benefit bond sale on Saturday night February 12 starting 7 30 p m. Prizes include a $7 50 bank account from The First National Bank a Bluebird Bird house from Mr Kochitzky and a grand prize hand made crocheted bedspread donated by Mrs Joe Park. The display is at J C Penney Co with bidding capped at 500 except for the grand prize. A housecoat donated by Mrs E L Taylor also encourages support.
Cyrus Pulk a 23 year old paratrooper from Pilot Mountain arrived from Sicily to receive medical care for a leg and knee injury. He landed behind enemy lines during the Sicily invasion and was hurt while destroying an ammo dump when a shell struck his knee. He reached Norfolk January 17 and went to a Nashville hospital before transfer to White Sulphur Springs West Virginia for surgery.
Pilots Bomber received his wings in May 1843 and now serves as a B 24 Liberator bomber pilot. He is the son of Mr and Mrs J D Miller of route 6 Mount Airy and is married to a wife who resides on route.
Mrs. Thomas King left Saturday and will seek employment with Glenn Martin Co. in Baltimore.
From 14 clubs in the county Page Johnson of Dobson presided. Skits and demonstrations by Siloam Dobson and Mountain Park clubs highlighted the day. Marceline Simmons of Pilot Mountain won grand champion and $139 plus medal. other medals went to Faye Johnson Dobson Bobby Cockerham Mountain Park Lucy Creed Shoals and Graggie Kidd Dobson. Copeland Club won the banner as County Champion. attendance banner went to North Elkin with 110 points, Lowgap 75, White Plains 72.
The Boy Scouts of the Surry District conclude their 34th Anniversary Week with a Public Court of Honor at the First Presbyterian Church at 7:30 tonight. Eagle Badge awarded to Haywood Merritt of Troop 34 by Scout Executive W. E Vaughan Lloyd. Civic Day awards go to Jimmy Barber of Troop 38 as Scout Mayor and other scout officers. The Lions Club presents its annual award to the top district achiever, with Rev Palton C. Lytie delivering the closing talk.
A group of infantrymen who fought in North Africa arrived in England to aid Miss Kathleen Hart of Washington, D. C. The troops spent the past days with her parents in this city.
