Mount Airy merchants announce Dollar Days will run Friday Saturday and Monday with many values offered. A few stores may extend the sales into Tuesday of next week for shoppers to take advantage of the savings.
The Mount Airy church reports Rev. Otey resigns as pastor of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church after eight years of service. Under his leadership the church expanded education facilities and decor, bought land for recreation, grew its budget from 3526 to 14633 dollars, and.
The Court of Honor at Presbyterian Church tonight at 7 30 features the Lions Club Award for top advancement in the Surry District. Certificates of office will be given, with Rev Wilson Nesbitt, pastor at Levels Crow Church Copeland, as the main speaker.
Dobson Lions Club plans a Farmers Day program for area farmers on February 28 at the Dobson school auditorium. Events start 2 30 p m with supper in the school gymnasium to follow. Committees include Attendance and reception and program and publicity with named members. Finance Purchasing and serving roles list several gentlemen as organizers.
William 8 Thompson of Johnson City Tennessee arrived here Wednesday as new manager of Watson's Department Store. A native of Tennessee he has worked with Watson's Store for almost two years and previously with Montgomery Ward five years in Los Angeles at Cornett Store. He returned to Tennessee to become advertising manager of the Elizabethton Daily Star and is married with four children staying in Johnson City until a home is found in Mount Airy.
Sparger Robertson, chairman, said the Surry County polio drive will continue until February 14 to reach the quota. He noted 63,000 has been contributed and urged communities and schools to report and donate through Mount Airy.
A large number of Mount Airy men are summoned for possible service on the jury to try John W Gambill for murder near Elkin. Two women from Mount Airy and Siloam may join the capital case jury.
Surry County Chapter of the American Red Cross launches its 1950 fund drive on March 1 with a goal of 8031 and a nationwide campaign to raise 67000000 for humanitarian work led by Gen. George C. Marshall. Thomas Ashby chairs the campaign. co chairs are Mrs. Ralph Sykes and Mrs. Robert Lovill Jr. The drive begins at 10 am at Central Methodist Church with an address by a keynote speaker and a live broadcast over WPAQ.
Music lovers enjoyed a Winston-Salem Music Club concert directed by Thor Johnson of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at Reynolds Auditorium. The 850 piece ensemble played two hours to a packed house with two encores amid prolonged applause. Attendees from Mount Airy included Lester Haynes and family, C. Paulette and wife, and others.
Mrs Harriett Vass Puckett, widow of Dock F. Puckett of Ararat Virginia, died January 26 at her daughter’s home near Laurel Fork. Born July 16 1859 in Gladesboro she married in 1678. Funeral was at Rome Church with burial at Ree Run cemetery atop Dee Run gap. Survived by son K M Pucket and daughter Mrs E K Tanks.

James Henry Young, 25, of Ararat Virginia, pleaded guilty in Superior Court to murdering J C Durden in Columbus Georgia. He admitted beating Durden with a hammer after bloody clothing was found in his Mount Airy room and testified he killed Durden during an assault.

Mount Airy leaders promised an expedited Utilities Commission hearing after forwarding resident grievances about inadequate telephone service. The town board urged a public hearing and a full survey of current facilities and needs for Mount Airy with Raleigh to conduct the probe.
Joe Boott, 24, was arrested Saturday by Carroll County Virginia Officers at his Pilot Mountain home in connection with Hillsville high school robbery the prior Wednesday. He faces creaking and entering and grand larceny charges and is held on $1,000 bond awaiting hearing Monday February 13. About 175 dollars was stolen from two boxes in the principal's office after a window was smashed with a brick and the lock damaged. A janitor found the break-in and police recovered two empty boxes and discarded checks on the school grounds. The Hillsville area had seen two other thefts that week including tires batteries oil candy cigarettes and an adding machine at a local store, totaling around 60 dollars, with 100 gallons of gas stolen from a gas pump nearby.
