Mount Airy Man Sustains Severe Burns in Apartment Fire
A 39-year-old Mount Airy resident, Ralph Gene Kirby, is in serious condition at North Carolina Baptist Hospital after a Friday apartment fire. He suffered second and third degree burns over about half his body while trying to escape from the Mitchell Street dwelling. The fire, centered in the living room, damaged the apartment and nearby units with drapes and smoke. Cause remains under investigation. Kirby was revived by county rescue crews and transferred from Northern Surry Hospital to Winston-Salem.

Relief agencies seek 1500 more to endure winter crisis
