The project jointly by Living For Young Homemakers and Badgett Concrete Products aimed to adapt hotel school and industrial construction methods to residential building with many U.S. manufacturers attending the luncheon. Tom Ingram of Sunoco from Hartaville South Carolina James Foley and Edward Douglas of the Tecton Corporation from Columbus were among those present.

Industrialist Richard Chatham dies in Duke Hospital
Richard Thurmond Chatham aged 60, former Fifth District congressman and Elkin industrialist, died at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at Duke Hospital Durham after a cerebral hemorrhage. A naval veteran and longtime head of Chatham Manufacturing, he had retired from Congress in 1955 after four terms. Funeral services were held at Elkin’s First Methodist Church with graveside rites at Salem Cemetery.

Franklin grade school destroyed by fire near Mount Airy
Surry County shuts its largest consolidated school after an undetermined origin fire destroyed Franklin grade school two miles west of Mount Airy. Eighth grade teacher Frank Walker and staff directed about 100 early arrivals to safety with no injuries. Mount Airy firemen, hampered by lack of water connections, saved adjoining structures and fought the blaze from the roof of a junior high building.
