Property owners must list with the Tax Supervisor by Saturday. Listing at the courthouse office is possible today. Mail forms by Saturday. Pilot Mountain Elkin and Mount Airy offices open until noon Saturday.
The Brotherhood of Peace from Mount Airy won WXIT Channel 12 March of Dimes Telerama Battle of the Bands at the Benton Convention Center. Judges and viewers watched bands from Winston-Salem, Piedmont area and Boston compete. The Brotherhood raised over 1000 dollars in pledges and received a trophy. Members include Dennis Tolbert Mike Arrington and Ronnie Smith. Tolbert thanked supporters for the donations.
Mount Airy officials push for stronger local control over wine sales. Mayor W Maynard Beamer criticizes state ABC enforcement and asks lawmakers to empower permit revocation at nuisance establishments. Town attorney Carroll Gardner to report on legal options. county action had allowed wine nearby but not within town limits.
A 98 year old Mount Airy woman, Cora Goins Gallant, died when a small wood heater overheated and set her two room log cabin on fire on Route 3 Slate Mountain. Fire crews found her body in the kitchen after extinguishing the blaze and the Surry County Sheriff’s Office investigates with the Fire Marshall. Funeral services were held at Mondy Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Slate Mountain Church Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter Ruth Willard and a son William Gallant among ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The Surry Arts Council aims for a 10500 fund goal at kickoff Monday night led by president Mrs. W. W Chapman at First Presbyterian Church. Volunteers rehearsed a one act play and plan a regional theater showing in Birmingham Alabama. Report meetings run Fridays 5 to 6 pm starting February 14 at Planters National Bank.
A robbery gone violent in Cana Virginia left Emanuel Easter 77 and his daughter Foy Lee Leonard 45 dead. A third person Melvin Easter 21 faces murder robbery and kidnapping charges. The elderly man carried 1500 in cash and the home was ransacked.
A Tuesday snow and ice storm caused minor damage with few wrecks. No serious accidents reported Tuesday or Wednesday though several fall related injuries occurred at Northern Surry Hospital. Utility lines suffered minimal damage with power restored by Wednesday afternoon. Public works delayed snow pushing to hasten melt.
Former Surry County Sheriff Jim Taylor did not appear for a scheduled meeting due to illness while asking the county board to grant severance pay for accrued vacation time. Commissioner Clayborn Taylor noted no prior elected official has received severance, and a prior request was denied. Chairman A Haywood Merritt Sr. indicated the board might reverse but is unlikely to do so.
Mount Airy Airport Authority approved Gateway Aviation Inc to operate Mount Airy Surry County Airport. Local pilots express skepticism and threaten to move planes to Elkin. Newell Baker Jr calls pilots disgruntled and says terms are unclear. Gateway plans 15 rental aircraft, air taxi, a training school and hangars, with Benbow steering local operations.
A mid morning crash at the U S 52 U S 601 junction involving a GMC transport and a pickup blocked traffic for almost three hours. Lacquer spilled from twenty 55 gallon drums belonging to Lilly Company High Point prompting firefighting and cleanup. Barrino charged with driving too fast for conditions and failure to stop for a red light.
