Surry County commissioners at their regular meeting call for a 500000 bond to establish a community college near Dobson adjacent to Surry Central High School. They plan a tax levy to cover principal and interest with a public hearing February 17 and aim to open in fall 1965 if approved.
Northern Surry Hospital named Hospital of the Month by Winston-Salem District of Health Careers for North Carolina. The hospital and Martin Memorial School of Nursing and School of Medical Technology hosted a careers program and tours for guidance counselors and principals in Mount Airy. Faculty also take part in area high school career days. Health Careers of North Carolina coordinates guidance on health careers statewide and promotes more than 200 health fields. District coordinators collaborate with schools, health organizations, and training facilities.
Daniel Baxter Spencer Jr of Lambsburg Virginia is jailed in Hillsville awaiting trial Monday on larceny from person charges. Albert Matthews of Richmond says Spencer took his billfold with credit cards and cash.
City auto tags in Mount Airy are selling at a steady pace, slightly ahead of last year. About 1,500 tags had been sold by noon yesterday. annual sales run around 2,500. Reid Stewart of the local tax office says sales may rise next week and warns that those failing to display tags after February 15 face court citations.
Self-Service Fashions holds its grand opening at its Main Street location beside the Cinema Theatre. Owner Mrs. Hubert Goad brings prior experience from Mount Airy. A free dress prize is offered in a special drawing for attendees.
Cheryl Creed senior at North Surry High School is named a National Merit finalist from a pool of 16 000. The Mount Airy resident daughter of Mr and Mrs Reuben Creed routes 5 Pipers Gap Road is among 1 600 finalists who may win scholarships. Selections announced March 20. Creed plans to attend Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer this fall.
Quotations from Wednesday sales at the Mount Airy Livestock Market show top boys at 15.75 dollars and sows reaching 11.50. Calves attained up to 34 dollars with a heavy top near 28 dollars.
Police Chief W H Sumner presented 1963 department activities to town commissioners. Auto thefts rose from 16 to 33, injuries in crashes doubled to 74, and 252 accidents were investigated. Officers logged 115871 patrol miles and 145 quarts of oil used, with 1678 arrests and 6232 citations.
Mount Airy merchants launch February Dollar Days with merchandise stocked on sale. Clerks spent hours moving goods from storerooms to floors and tagging discounts on fall and winter lines to clear inventory.
The Surry County Republican Party plans a 2 PM county convention at the Dobson courthouse following a Tuesday GOP Women event where candidates O H Daggett and Donald Badgley spoke to about 100 attendees. Daggett urged tax cuts and veteran bonuses while Badgley promoted GOP legislative wins and proposed policies.
Beulah School principal Glenn Robertson was installed as governor of the Piedmont North Carolina District 31 of Ruritan during the National convention in New Orleans in January. The district includes 24 clubs across Surry Stokes Yadkin Wilkes Cabarrus Guilford Davie and Randolph Counties. Five lieutenant governors were assigned to zones with named appointees and locations.
Billy Ray Goins aged 24, a former Mounta Police officer, joins the local department as patrolman. He is married with one child and resides at Hanter Park, increasing the force to its full strength of 20 uniformed men.
