City commissioners pass ordinance enforcing parking meters in the business district. Motorists must pay a one dollar fine for meter violations, with payment due at City Hall within five days or face Recorder's Court action.
Valencia Jane Gilbert 85 died at her home Monday after a stroke. Born in Patrick County Virginia to Joy and Ruth Newman, she was widow of Henry Gilbert a local blacksmith. Funeral Wednesday at 2 p.m. at home, Dr Charles N Clark presiding. burial in Oakdale Cemetery. Survived by three sons, four daughters, one sister, 38 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.
Fire destroyed part of Paul Hulls home on Orchard Street after a plumber used a blow torch to thaw frozen pipes. Firemen tore into the roof and ceiling, fighting freezing winds for over 30 minutes. Other calls included a motor fire at Rose's store, a chimney fire at Roy Campbells house, an oil stove explosion with no damage, and soot in a church furnace with smoke but no harm. Fire Chief Witt warns stove users to monitor fires and avoid long burn intervals.
Miss Christine Webb of the local High School faculty fell on the steps Monday causing a minor spine injury. She received treatment at the school and hopes to be back to work shortly.
The 72 year old Brannock, longtime member of the local fire department, will mark forty three years on the force this Saturday. He joined as a full time fireman on February 8 1904 and was named assistant fire chief the same year a position he held for 12 years. In addition to his duties he serves as fire inspector for all city business buildings. He remains active climbing stairs and sliding down the pole when alarms sound.
William Hanford of Burlington and John Hudspeth of Elkin were convicted in Yadkin County Superior Court on liquor violations and related counts. Hudspeth received 7000 dollars and Hanford 7500 dollars after a jury verdict following a December chase involving 252 sealed liquor bottles.
The Surry County Board of Education awarded seven agricultural and mechanical shop buildings to Palk and Neddham of Pilot Mountain. Flat Rock shop priced at 14134.88 with total project cost 99500. Electrical work adds 4375. Financed by part of a 210000 bond issue under two thirds retirement rule.
North Carolina political leader and former governor Max Gardner died Thursday morning in a New York hotel at 3 30 o clock From heart attack He had been named American Ambassador to the Court of St James by President Truman Gardner also served as Secretary of the Treasury and a member of Congress He was a Shelby native prominent in the Democratic party and owned cotton interests in the state.
Mr and Mrs James E Johnson and daughter Carole move into their new Park Drive home in North Mount Airy between Oakdale Street and Burke Development. A wave of new houses is expected nearby as construction continues from Holcomb Apartments on Pine.
Odell Coleman of Winston-Salem served as keynote at a VFW Post banquet at the Blue Ridge Hotel on January 30. The VFW chief of staff outlined the NC Department of VFW work and year’s progress and offered membership guidance. The drive boosted local Post membership by over 33 percent through a three-team competition, with Clyde Goad winning a prize for recruiting the most members.
Surry County Guilford College Alumni Association chapter will host a dinner meeting at 7 p m on February 13 at the Blue Ridge Hotel. If notices miss you, call Mrs A P Phillips at 480-W by February 12 to attend. campus visitors are expected and strong alumni turnout is hoped.
The Surry Superior Court will convene next Monday in Dobson for a civil trial term presided by Judge Frank Armstrong. jurors include R. W. Seal, W. M. Quesinberry, Prank Kirkman, and others from Mount Airy Pilot Mountain and surrounding areas.
Pilot Mountain home talent to stage a three act comedy titled Cornzapoppin on February 12 and 13. Rehearsals underway sponsored by the Legions of Pilot Mountain. The play promises riotous comedy and entertainment.
Dr. P. W. Green and Dr. Otis Oliver hosted a turkey dinner at the First Baptist Church to launch a drive for about $6,000 to build a recreation building for the church youths. The 30 by 50 foot one story structure with basement will be on the Rufus Moore property and include an assembly room, fireplace, kitchen, porch, cloak room, Boy Scout room, workshop, heating plant, and toilets.
Rufus Wilkerson Redman a longtime Surry County resident passed away at 5 30 pm Monday at his Mount Airy Route 1 home after a long illness He was 59 year Mason for 59 years Hollow Springs Baptist Church member Surviving are his widow two sons Elbert and Charles two daughters and several relatives Funeral services were held at 230 pm Wednesday with Granite City Masonic Lodge in charge and Rev Walter Calloway officiating
Mrs. Anna Virginia Clement Booker died January 30 at her son Phillip Booker's Sulphur Springs Road home after months of illness. Funeral held January 31 at 3 30 p.m. from Joe and Anna Booker's 150 South Main Street. Rev. James E. Rink and Rev. Reuben Payne officiated. Burial in Oakdale Cemetery. Survived by husband Joe Booker and son Phillip Booker.
In August 1944 a search party from the Sheriff’s Department and Highway Patrol looked through Blue Ridge from Lowgap toward Blowing Rock but found no trace of a plane with three men aboard. Later hikers found the wreck at Wooly Top Mountain near Gatlinburg at 5,400 feet, identified by a wing serial number. No bodies were recovered, but authorities said remains may have been eaten by wild animals. The victims were Pilot A. E. Leonard Co-Pilot S. R. Parham and Reuben Johnson, all of Charlotte.
Calvin Graves, formerly of this city, was elected president of the Forsyth Bar Association in Winston-Salem this week. He is the son of Mrs. Calvin Graves of Rawley Avenue and succeeds Joe W. Johnson, son of the late editor J. E. Johnson, as president.
John R. Cruse of the local Health Department bought the Johnnie Prather house adjacent to the Nurse's Home and moved in with his family last week. The Holcomb Apartments unit vacated by them is now occupied by Mr and Mrs Henry and their son Phillip. Mr Henry manages Watson's Department Store.
Mrs. Atwood Newell of Asneboro is visiting her parents Mr and Mrs J W Prather in the city. She is better known locally as Miss Prances Prather.
