State Food Administrator issues a letter to North Carolina millers detailing an order restricting flour sales to combinations with other cereals. Rules require fair distribution, limit town shares, ban certain flour sales, and mandate substitutes for bread flour purchases.
The North Carolina food administration imposes new flour sale rules requiring millers and wholesalers to pair flour with specific cereal substitutes. Retailers must offer flour only in combination with an equal amount of substitutes and may price flour with up to one cent profit per pound. Whole wheat flour may be sold with half its weight in substitutes, and a wide list of allowed substitutes is enumerated. The measure aims to conserve white flour, spread supply, and support war efforts.
The United States announced arrival of 16 former German merchantmen and two former Austrian steamships in Europe carrying thousands of American troops and vast quantities of supplies. Washington warns that every laying hen sold before May 1 costs about 30 eggs in the nations food supply.
