At the Surry County Unit of the American Cancer Society semi annual meeting Clyde S. Goad was elected president. Other officers include Sparger Robertson vice president Dr Charles Robertson executive board chair and medical advisor Mrs William Allred executive secretary Miss Jessie Angel treasurer and Ralph Epperson crusade chairman. Ray Beckler urged education and research noting 65 cancer deaths in Surry last year and more than 5,000 in North Carolina this year. Epperson outlined plans for the April Crusade campaign and continued cancer outreach.

Four injured in NC 104 two vehicle crash near White Sulphur Springs
A two vehicle collision on NC 104 at White Sulphur Springs sent four people to Northern Surry Hospital in the 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. period. Donald Carter, 18, of Ararat Virginia, was charged with reckless driving after his 1955 Ford convertible struck a southbound 1952 Chevrolet pickup driven by John Hawks, 53. Willard Mabe, 21, and Brian Gates, 66, suffered injuries. The Ford went off an embankment after the crash, but spectators said injuries could have been worse.
