The Veterans of Foreign Wars announces Golden Jubilee Week from April 3 to 9 to honor the Gay Nineties origin of the first post. Local commander John B. Wolfe says parades dances a Main Street celebration and speeches will draw thousands to Granite City. A Thursday parade on April 7 features the high school band National Guard Boy Scouts Shrine Club and more with Main Street closed for spectators. Plans include naming Man of the Year and Organization of the Year for 1948 achievements.

Car-Trailer Wreck Near Mount Airy Leaves Couple Injured
A trailer automobile crash on Needham Hill five miles south of Mount Airy seriously injured Mr. and Mrs. Bill Tilley both 25 of Mount Airy. He suffered a severe head injury and was unconscious for about 48 hours. She had chest injuries and facial lacerations. Alvin York Potts 27 of Wilson was later released on $2,000 bond for reckless driving and driving while intoxicated after driving a tractor trailer loaded with tobacco sheets toward Mount Airy. The car driven by Mr. Tilley was wrecked across part of the highway. The State Patrol investigated. The couple planned to work in Winston Salem. Suspected intoxication and danger period noted.

Negro Steals Money From Shell Station
Willie Payne a 20 year old man was arrested for breaking into the Shell Service Station on Main Street during the weekend. About 197 taken from the cash register and 1800 missing from the company safe. He admitted the robbery after entering through the ladies room and a hole dug from the men’s room.
