Red Cross Production Hits All Time High in Surry Chapter
The Surry County Red Cross reports a record year with 215 women working 40 408 hours to produce 4309 garments. Over 3100 items went to armed forces including Army and Air Corps sweaters helmets gloves wristlets and Navy watchcaps scarves and hospital items. Triple Slayer Put To Death In Raleigh Gas Chamber
Alex Harris self confessed triple slayer died in the state gas chamber for the August 1942 shooting death of Mrs. E. A. Bill at a Raeford area filling station. The Hoke county tenant farmer said he broke God and man’s laws yet prayed for forgiveness and death as an example. His son Johnny, home on leave, was later killed in a Hoke county filling station.
