Auto Dealer D. C. Lewis Dies in Asheville Hospital
D. C. Lewis 72 of 1068 North Main Street Mount Airy died Monday in an Asheville hospital after a long illness. He was a Pilot Mountain native and longtime auto dealer, serving as president of Surry Sales Co. Funeral services were set for 10 30 am Wednesday at Moody Funeral Chapel with burial in Oakdale Cemetery.

The eleventh annual Virginia Carolina Fruit School will meet Wednesday and Thursday at the Reeves YMCA in Mount Airy with 150 orchardists. Speakers from NCSU and Virginia Tech will join county extension staffs to cover strawberry culture, apple and peach production, weed control, post harvest developments, and marketing. Ed Douglas chairs the event. Mayor Beamer to welcome attendees at the opening session.

Mount Airy police headquarters logged 26 new arrests over the weekend. Police made 16 arrests, state troopers 8, and sheriff's deputies 2. Offenses included nine liquor law violations, nine auto infractions with six drunken driving cases, and eight miscellaneous offenses.
