J F Smithwick a wealthy cotton merchant from Beaufort county North Carolina lies in a coma like state at the State hotel Toledo Ohio. Doctors suspect more than gas caused the condition and say he has spoken little while remaining mostly unconscious. He had planned marriage with a Toledo fiancée after correspondence started from an advertisement in a matrimonial paper. Police investigate but the mystery endures.
