Traffic tragedy on Route 89 near Mount Airy kills two
A head on collision two miles north of Mount Airy Saturday night on Route 89 killed Claude France Looker 63 and Linda Gay Jones 18 of Mount Airy and seriously injured five others. Nancy Woods 18 Cana Va. and Laura Woods 16 Cana Va. suffered critical injuries along with Bobby Cana 19 Ararat Va. Trooper Morris said Hooks 1969 Ford pickup crossed center line causing the crash which trapped all seven inside their vehicles for about 40 minutes before rescue crews used the Jaws of Life. No charges were filed in the incident.

January Coldest On Record In Raleigh Durham Area
The National Weather Service says January will be the coldest on record in the Raleigh Durham area with an average first 28 days of 2.9 degrees. Seven new record lows and four new record highs were logged through Friday. A low of one below zero on the 17th set a new Raleigh Durham airport January record. The winter season record low remains two below zero in February 1899.
