Wendell Simmons of the Flat Rock Raritan Club was installed as District Governor of the new Piedmont District of North Carolina, part of the Western District. Fred Goins and Glenn Robertson became lieutenant governors of Zone Three at the Atlantic City national convention. The Piedmont NC district includes 20 clubs, with nine in Surry County, reaching Wilkes, Caswell, and South Carolina lines. Raritan National is now the fifth largest civic organization with 32,000 members in 19 states.

A noon Monday crash at Granite and Foy streets left two drivers charged by Mount Airy Police. Claude Puckett's 1952 Chevrolet was parked on Granite Street when Kenneth Wayne Tolbert's 1950 Ford, coming down Foy Street, failed to stop and struck the parked car. No injuries reported. both vehicles deemed total losses. Tolbert charged with operating a car while intoxicated. passenger Roy Wade Gwyn charged with aiding and abetting intoxicated driving.

Fire department called to house fire in Mount Airy
Yesterday morning about 11:35 o'clock the Mount Airy Fire Department was summoned to a brick frame house at 325 occupied by Mrs. Rowa Schafer. Firefighters responded quickly to control the blaze and prevent further damage to the residence. No injuries are reported.

Five Cars Pile Up On Ice On Poplar St
Five cars collided on icy East Poplar Street during early morning rain, causing about $1,000 in damage.
