Six of the crash occupants are shown in the image from last Friday night near Mount Airy where seven people died. Eidson Johnson remains hospitalized at Martin Memorial with a fractured leg and skull injuries. Dewey Owens among the dead was not pictured.
Three Grover White sons from Brim Virginia are discharged from military service. Pic Herbert White remains in Germany after two years in the army and saw action in Holland and Germany. Pvt Harold White has a medical discharge and works at a Norfolk naval base. Emmett White M M 2 C left Navy in November after three years, 28 months in the Pacific with the Sea Bees, now with wife Lucille Phaup in Newport News. Roland White EM 2 C served three and a half years in the Navy, 32 months in the Pacific, discharged December 18.
Mrs W P Hornaday of 266 South Street reports receiving two letters from each of her two sons Archie L Hornaday in China and B M Wm J Hornaday on Okinawa. Both pairs were written the same day and arrived the same day, a repeat of a prior instance about ten days earlier.
Lieut. Warwick Cecil Carpenter whose ship is now at Norfolk Virginia is spending a ten day leave with his family and familiar friends.
Major John B. Wolfe arriving from Germany on January 17 spends a few days in the city on terminal leave. He served nearly three years overseas with the Ordnance department and was formerly a salesman for Duke Power Co. in this city.
Jesse B Carlton lands in Tacoma Washington after 18 months in the Pacific war zone and heads toward Port Bragg to receive his discharge. His wife Mary Carlton serves as clerk of the Recorder's Court.
Major F E K Chappell Jr of the U S Marines has been the overnight guest of his father here. He is en route to Chicago where he reports for duty as a recruiting officer.
The First Baptist Church of Mount Airy plans a special service and reception to honor veterans. About half of local service members have returned, with the event set for February 10, 1946 at 7:30 PM.
Turner McMillan Crawford MecMillan, 77, died at 6 P M Tuesday in Ararat Virginia. The funeral was held at 2 P M Thursday from W W Boyles home in Ararat with Rev Granville Gwyn officiating. His widow and children include Turner McMillan of Edman West Virginia, Mrs W V Boyles of Ararat, and Mrs J C Young of
A San Franciano reports a mix up at the Army Navy Hotel Bureau where a major was assigned a room, another major was moved in, and the first was told to sleep on the street until he learned the other occupant was a WAC. The bureau apologized after the revelation.
Edison Johnson of route 2 Pilot Mountain may be the sole survivor among eight occupants after a head-on collision on the Fancy Gap highway four miles north of Mount Airy last Friday night. Wade Greenwood and Ray Flippin drove the two cars. four killed at once and three others died later. Johnson was badly hurt and hospitalized. others killed were Mazie Money Hazel Hiatt James Chappell Ray Flippin Curtis Owens and Pfc Joe Flippin. The crash occurred on a curve near Arthur Jones's home as both cars reportedly aimed for the State Line Cafe. The community reels from the tragedy as families mourn and survivors cope with loss.
The Surry District Boy Scouts from Mount Airy plan activities for the 36th anniversary of the movement from February 3 to 8. Eagle Scout honors go to Glen Palk Pat Talley and Stanley Leftwich at a February 8 Court of Honor. Jim Lamm leads as Scout Mayor with a schedule of civic roles and theater events in Mount Airy.
A letter from Col. Hugh L. Prather, Camp Butner Medical Corps Commander, thanks the Camp Butner Hospital Council for gifts sent by Red Crow units. Gifts were provided for patients and soldiers arriving through Christmas Day, with many men receiving esrant gifts.
James Childress was freed on bond after a pistol duel at Pete Bianco's home Sunday night. Bianco was wounded in the lung and shoulder and Irene Damico was hit by a stray bullet. Childress returned fire and was shot in the foot. Bianco is treated at Martin Memorial Hospital.
Jasper S. Patterson, 4, of Siloam died in Martin Memorial Hospital January 24 after a brief illness from a stomach ailment. He was a well known county resident active in local churches.
The Veterans Of Foreign Wars announce a meeting location change from Moose Hall to City Hall on Tuesday night in what officials describe as a routine relocation.
A banquet in Roth Memorial YMCA Elkin honored Thurmond Chatham. Speaker Charles A. Cannon and organizer Carl Goerch led the event as Chatham’s Navy career included a rank reduction to lieutenant commander and Pacific service including New Britain bombardment in 1943. His sons Hugh and Dick Chatham served with distinction.
W. E. Merritt Sr. is hospitalized in Fort Myers Florida with a deep cold. Family members, including Mr. and Mrs. William Merritt and Mr. and Mrs Haywood Merritt, are at Port Myers to support him.
Bennett Lowe sustained a facial wound from a gunshot to the head region near Lowgap. John Murphy, Lowe's son in law, was reportedly shot through the ear. Dixon was detained on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
William G. MacIntosh 75 a retired stonecutter died January 19 at his Route 2 home. He was a native of Dundee Scotland and had been a longtime resident of the area.
Joan Wesley McMillan, 63, of Ararat Virginia, died Saturday at 12:45 AM. He leaves widow Jennie Marie McMillan, three sons, three daughters in Virginia, 28 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and two brothers. The funeral was held Sunday at Jim Runtes Chapel with officiant Oraovide Gwynn.
The annual Roosevelt Ball in the city on Wednesday night netted more than 500 for the polio fund. Sponsored by the Exchange Club and tied to the county March of Dimes drive, the Rockford Street school auditorium hosted a full audience. Donations remain welcome through Exchange Club members.
Miss Nina Binder daughter of C Binder of this city spent 19 months in Red Cross recreational work in Europe. She is now with her sister Mrs G K Hale. She led field recreation clubs for soldiers in England and France. She greeted 17 Mount Airy boys released from captivity and heard of many others in the area.
Word reached here that Mrs. F D Holcomb of this city, who entered Dr Trapsoe Health Clinic in Winston Salem last week, became quite ill Wednesday afternoon and was moved to City Hospital Thursday.
Spencer Fulcher aged 81 died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Edgar Welch in this city Tuesday about 10 AM. Survived by two wives, 20 descendants including sons John J. Fulcher and A L Fulcher and daughters Mrs. R E Wilkinson and Mrs H E Shunk. Funeral Thursday 10:30 AM from the home with Rev. Joel Marshall and Rev. Reuben Payne. Burial in Wilkinson Cemetery at Hilleville.
Mrs Charity Prance also known as Aunt Pannie Smith, longtime Galem Methodist Church member, died Saturday morning at her son Davis G Smith's home after pneumonia and age. She was twice married first to John Jones and later to William Smith, leaving son Darke G Smith and daughters Mrs Beasie Genith and Mrs Ade Jones Scales.
