Mystery surrounds death of Mose Owens in Patrick County
Mose Owens 22 of Westfield was found killed near the state line on the Patrick road Saturday night. Roy Cook of Westfield accompanied him. Cook’s account raised questions as he sought help, and investigators concluded the wound was unlikely self inflicted. An inquest at Pilot Mountain ordered Cook held. Owens’ family questions Cook’s version as he remains jailed in Stuart.

Rufus Goins Dies After Hospital Operation
Rufus Goins a Planters Warehouse grocer aged 41 died at Duke Hospital Durham after an operation for a crippled leg. He fell ill from lockjaw following the procedure and died Monday. Survived by wife and one child. Funeral held at home on Maple Street with Rev. J. W. McPall officiating. Interment in Oakdale Cemetery.

Inland Leviathan Hog Weighed 929 Pounds in Surry County
Will Davis of the Lowgap area butchered his famed Red Curoe hog after feeding it a steady diet of shelled corn. The 3 year 5 month old mammoth, killed with a six shots to the forehead and a final axe swing, dressed at 929 pounds and drew crowd estimates near 927 to 933 pounds.

Tragic Domestic Scene Near Dobson Ends in Double Death
Sheriff John D. Thompson reports a chilling scene at James Nance’s Little Richmond farm. Nance, 37, killed his wife in bed then shot himself, leaving eight children ages 9 months to 15 years. A 16 year old daughter cared for siblings as funerals and estate arrangements proceeded.

Small Boy Killed in Accidental Rifle Discharge
An 11 year old, Monroe Collins, was killed when a rifle discharged during a playful wrestle over possession near Pine Ridge, Mount Airy. The shot struck him in the back of the head. Noah Collins is the father. Sheriff Thompson and Coroner Dr. R. E. Smith ruled the death an accident and the funeral was held at Mountain View Church.
