Mount Airy residents and visitors enjoyed a festive Christmas Outdoor Decorative Lighting Contest sponsored by The News. A judging panel led by Mrs. Geo. E. Marshall and others awarded first prize to Mrs. E. C. Bivens, second to Attorney H. O. Woltz, and third to Mrs. J. M. Hollingsworth.

A son was born to Mr and Mrs Haywood Merritt Wednesday morning. Mrs W S Wolfe is recovering from influenza and should return home soon. W Y Riddle improving after surgery for ruptured appendix. J C C Dillon had an appendectomy on Christmas Eve. Mrs Mary Armfield is improving. Porter Blevins suffers an infected ankle and leg. Several minor accidents treated at the hospital last week. Rev and Mrs A C Gibbs and children spent Christmas with relatives in Gibsonville.

Mrs. Conduff Hosts Seven Table Christmas Bridge Party
Mrs. 8S. A. Conduff entertained seven table bridge at her North Main Street home Friday night in honor of her niece Miss Oleta Bethe Martin of Hilleville Virginia. High score by Mrs. Frederick Smith earned linen towels. Miss Mabel Woods received a shoulder corsage for low score. Miss Martin received perfume. Refreshments featured a salad course with Russian tea and favors included mint holders with miniature trees and lighted candles.

Car Wreck Leaves Jarvis Hurt on Mount Airy Road
Jim Jarvis drove Sunday on the Mount Airy to Pilot Mountain road when his car left the hard surface and tumbled off the road into soft earth. The vehicle nosed into a fence and somersaulted head first. Jarvis and companion Clarence Carpenter escaped with facial injuries.

Club Women Spread Christmas Cheer to Soldiers
Eighteen Christmas stockings were filled by members of the Woman's Club for the soldiers at Oteen. The package was sent December 17. Members of the club also supplied Christmas eats to the County Home and jail.

Woltz Furnace Explodes Damaging Home Interior
A Woltz residence suffered heavy damage when a furnace exploded Sunday morning. Steam and smoke filled the lower floor and rafters in the basement caught fire before Mr. H. O. Woltz managed to extinguish the blaze with help from the fire company called to the scene.

All State Football Players Arrive In Mount Airy
Sixteen all state high school football players arrived in Mount Airy for a New Year’s Day game against Oak Ridge. Coaches Underwood Spurlock Poindeter and two others prep the squad with six days of intensive drills. The event draws hundreds as Mount Airy hosts the annual high school classic. Officers Capture Four Gallons Christmas Liquor
Police raided Westfield Saturday night and found four gallons of liquor hidden near Roy Arrington's premises. A hidden delivery was suspected as customers and a bootlegger fled before officers stepped from cover. Sunday morning the liquor was recovered in an open field and Arrington was arrested.
