Town employees will take two days for Christmas Thursday and Friday with only regular emergency services operating. Water and tax offices close Saturday. Trash collection in the business district resumes Saturday morning.
Surry Chapter of the National Foundation March of Dimes held a parade on Main Street at 4 p.m. and a dance at 8 p.m. at the National Guard Armory. Becky McMillian won the queen title with $445, Sherrie Harris was runnerup with $289, and Suzanne Hayes earned third with $161.65.
The Granite City sees a brisk late buying surge as weekend shopping picks up. Stores report steady activity Friday with banners days and strong demand despite Sunday sleet and rain threatening plans.
Mount Airy commissioners scheduled a public hearing for January 15 at 7 30 p m in City Hall to consider a two and a half page proposed blue laws code patterned after other North Carolina cities The plan would ban the sale of many goods on Sundays with limited Sunday openings for drug stores and a few hours on Sundays and require Saturday closings for non open stores The move follows a court ruling that the current code is unconstitutional and prior support from the Mount Airy Merchants Association for modern blue laws.
Spencer's Inc a Mount Airy infant wear maker paid 113000 in Christmas bonuses to its 1112 employees and gave each a turkey. President F L Hatcher announced a 5 percent pay raise starting January 1 in the revised blue law debate continues as Grants Store case is postponed to December 29.
The N. C. State Motor Club warns thirty people will die on Carolina roads during the Christmas weekend and about 900 more will be injured. Officials note the 102 hour counting period runs from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday. Local stores report brisk sales across toys clothing and home goods as Christmas approaches and merchants expect strong after Christmas exchange activity.
The U S Post Office facilities in the area will close Thursday for Christmas Day. No deliveries or window service will be offered that day. Regular service returns Friday. Postmaster Thomas Ashby noted facilities are ahead of last year in total mail, expecting the heaviest volume today as citizens rush last minute mail for Christmas delivery.
