The Salvation Army reports slower donations this year as 135 to 140 families apply for Christmas aid. Captain Clyde Beasley notes funds from the Christmas house on Main Street and a letter appeal fall short of demand. The charity welcomes cash, food, clothing, and toy donations.
The Mount Airy NEWS will publish 24 hours earlier for the weekend edition. The issue lands on Thursday instead of Friday due to Christmas. All deadlines move up 24 hours with materials due by 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Governor Bob Scott announced Floyd S. Pike of Mount Airy to the state Civil Air Patrol agency. His term ends September 1, 1971. Pike is president of Floyd S. Pike Electric Contractors Inc and a licensed pilot with extensive flight experience. Also named were William Bradford of Huntersville and Mrs Pam A Brown of Charlotte. their terms expire with Pike's.
A Bradenton Florida man, Glen Alfred Fenimore, 41, died at Northern Surry Hospital Friday after a heart attack while visiting friends in Mount Airy. He had attended his father's funeral in West Virginia and paused in Mount Airy on his way home. Death occurred about an hour after arrival.
Harris Hardware Inc on South Main Street at Rockford Street is changing its name to Harris Home Center. The project adds 8000 square feet of retail space, a 500 car parking lot, drive through service, lawn and garden center, gift center, sporting goods, and home remodeling department. Interior layout routes shoppers from gifts to appliances and rugs, with a carpeted, air conditioned sales area. Completion is planned by the end of February.
William K. Woltz of Mount Airy urged support for the Trade Act of 1970 during a Capitol Hill visit with Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Woltz, president of Perry Manufacturing Co., was joined by Norman M. Hin erfeld of the AAMA as they pushed the industry agenda.
The Mount Airy board of commissioners voted to bring back the CATY cable franchise issue and summon a firm representative to the January 5 meeting to show cause why a performance bond should not be forfeited and the franchise withdrawn. The firm claims progress with 43 miles of lines but no power at the transmitter site. The board also rezoned Franklin Street property for industrial use and parking, accepted Finance Director Tommy Golding’s resignation, and set town holiday hours from noon Thursday to Monday December 28.
Alfred Leevill Dean known as Chubby, 55, of Riverside New Jersey and formerly Mount Airy, died yesterday after a heart attack. He played in the major leagues for the Philadelphia Athletics. Funeral arrangements were incomplete. Survived by wife Jean Eddinger Dean daughter Donna Dean and brother Dayton Dean.
Flat Rock Ruritan Club honors Charles Goad and Clarence Fagg as Raritan of the Year during Ladies Night. Fred Goins installs 1971 officers including Alfred R. Hiatt as president and Cliff Midkiff as director. Perfect attendance pins are awarded to long serving members. Employees report a green tool box with tools missing from a service truck owned by Hylton Supply Company. Police were called Friday afternoon. officers have not located the toolbox.
Thirteen members of Boy Scout Troop 77 from Ararat Virginia started a bicycle ride at 5 30 a m Saturday for a 50 mile trip toward the Blue Ridge Parkway to begin a return ride. The event was sponsored by the Ararat Raritan Club and will kick off a pancake supper at 5 p m at the Raritan Club building. Reports say the scouts covered 25 miles by 11 a m. Rev Erik Johnson is Scout master of Troop 77.
S. Stuart Leake, long-time Reynolds Tobacco Co. leaf supervisor, elected vice president and director. He succeeds Fenton D. Royster who retires December 31. Leake will oversee domestic and overseas leaf buying and related operations. He joined Reynolds in 1935, rising through leaf buying roles, and is a Duke and UNC alumnus from Winston-Salem.
In November Chief Willis J. Fulton lists five auto accidents including one pedestrian fatality and two injuries. The force logged 1 001 patrol hours 3 166 miles driven 382 gallons of gas. Officers made 39 formal investigations 201 street checks and 43 hours in court.
Mrs Susan Belle Belton 81 of Mount Airy widow of Cleve Belton died Saturday at the N C Baptist Home for the Aged Winston Salem Funeral services were held yesterday at First Baptist Church She was born in Carroll County Va and was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Airy Surviving are five daughters two sons and two sisters Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery
Pilot Mountain votes to add one fulltime officer and one auxiliary. Chief Willis J. Fulton explains more manpower needed for court duties in the new District Court setup and to maintain patrols while officers testify in Dobson cases. An auxiliary, Sam Bryan Shem, will join. a second fulltime officer is anticipated soon.
The Northwest Production Credit Association directors and general manager A P Snow returned from Raleigh where they attended a Policy and Management Conference. W Howard Hardy of Siloam served as director and area association president. The PCA covers 10 area counties including Surry with 3200 former members and 8 million dollars on loan. Home office is Winston-Salem with branches in Yadkinville and Boone.
Mount Airy police logged 24 new cases over the past weekend. Eight liquor law violations and nine auto infractions including six drunken driving charges. The remaining cases include miscellaneous offenses such as a shoplifting incident at a downtown retail store Saturday afternoon.
Sherry Wall Hiatt a 21 year old resident of 2176 Snow Hill Drive drove on Worth Street bridge near US 52 when the car skidded on ice at about 9 10 a m Friday. The vehicle slid left then swung right ending before an embankment. Police estimate damage at 300 with no charges filed.
