The Sultan of Turkey a Despot in a Palace Prison
A British observer portrays Abdul Hamid II as a paranoid ruler, surrounded by spies in the Yildiz palace. He depicts the harem, court, and thousands of guards as a fortress of fear, cruelty, and controlled bloodshed to keep rivals in check. The account recalls the sultan’s fascination with crime stories and a Circassian girl’s murder in a chilling palace anecdote.
