The Friday night parade float contest results were announced by Mike Malmo. First place went to Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, second to Mount Airy Coca Cola Bottling Co, and third to First National Bank.
About 20 000 people watched Mount Airy first Christmas parade on Friday afternoon. The event, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Mount Airy Merchants Association, filled Veterans Memorial Park to Orchard Street and through the business district. Regular traffic was blocked for floats, beauty queens led by Elaine Herndon and Glenda Llewellyn, and notable entrants including Martha Jean Leonard riding the Shriners float.
Mount Airy veterans groups plan votes this week on selling a park section to the school board for 25 000 dollars to fund a new grade school. The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars debated the measure after a Thursday night oyster stew and a Friday meeting.
Westfield Raritans held its December meeting on Tuesday December 3 installing new officers for 1940. Jim Tilley became president with William B Christian as vice president Aaron Tilley secretary Stanley Christian treasurer and Oscar H Hauser director. The group planned a permanent Christmas fund for underprivileged children and discussed adult education through night school.
S F Venable 80 of White Plains died at his daughter's home at 6 p m Friday after a long illness. Born Oct 22 1877 in Surry County he was the son of Tom and Bethania Venable. Survived by one other daughter five sons three sisters 18 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. Funeral 2 pm Sunday at Friends Church White Plains with Rev Fred Morgan officiating. Burial in church cemetery. Grandsons pallbearers.
Three people were hurt in a Sunday two car collision near Pilot Inn east of Pilot Mountain. Victims include Robert Earl Sims age 42 and Mrs Sims both of Winston Salem and Doyle Lee Brunner age 23 of Greensboro. Jerry Nelson age 21 of Pilot Mountain drove a 1940 Ford that crossed into Sims lane causing the crash. Injuries are not serious and no charges yet filed as investigators continue.
Mrs Willie Dodson Sattler 58 of Denver formerly Pilot Mountain died early last week of a stroke. Daughter of the late West and Sadie Rierson Dodson of Walnut Cove. Survived by husband Henry Sattler of Denver and brother Eugene Dodson of Enfield. Funeral at Fort Logan with burial in Army Cemetery.
The Parent Teacher Association of Franklin High School will meet Thursday evening in the school lunchroom. A Christmas program will be presented by first second and third grades with participation from the high school glee club. All parents are urged to attend.

Federal investigators from the Alcohol Tax and Tobacco Division reported seven outfits shut in Wilkes County over the past week and four suspects arrested as part of an average still seizure per day.
Six people were shot by Miles F Wooten 59 of Yadkinville route 3 during a chase ending with Wooten dying in a Brannon area thicket. Highway Patrolman J W Buck Edwards Pilot Mountain was wounded in the eye and face and treated at Baptist Hospital. Deputies and officers from multiple counties joined the manhunt as Wooten fired on pursuing officers and residents including his estranged wife and Allen Jester.
Mount Airy residents Darlene Norman and J M Johnston, both from Route 2, are named co editors of Westfield High School's newspaper. Sheriff Brown reports a shooting incident during a pursuit, with a deputy wounded and a grandson later located, as investigators search the woods.
Doctors at a hospital in Winston Salem indicate hope to save Patrolman J W Buck Edwards eye after he was shot Friday night by Miles F Wooten. Edwards from Pilot Mountain, a Franklin County native, received about a dozen shots in the face with one entering the eyeball. By Sunday afternoon he could see a red light and doctors say about ten days will determine if the eye can be saved.
Second Lt. Robert B. Angle earned the Expert Infantryman Badge after passing written and practical tests in Schweinfurt Germany. A Bethel Connecticut native he entered the Army in September 1955 and is stationed abroad with his wife Claire Frank Angle and two young sons.
Mrs Shelby Nelson Phillips of Mount Airy waived preliminary hearing in Recorder's Court on forgery of 11 checks at Pine State Knitwear Co. She allegedly forged Lindsay Holcomb signatures and cashed them in town. Judge Westmoreland set bond at $2000, which she posted.
