Sheriff Sam Patterson must run the office with a $250 monthly reduction starting December 4, after a Board of County Commissioners order. He ponders cutting one deputy or reducing all deputy salaries while maintaining full staff.
Sherman Grubbs, 93, of Mount Airy, sustained serious head injuries when his car left Quarry Road and struck a cement wall near Harvey Walker’s home. Grubbs was charged with operating a car while intoxicated and having no operator's license. Highway Patrolman J B Howell investigated.

Elmer Horton, 35, of Max Meadows Virginia, was charged with reckless driving and hit and run after a police car was damaged on North South Street. Officers traced a Dodge tractor to Horton and linked him via witnesses and a local service station and cafe. Bond was set at $500.
Mount Airy sponsors of Floyd Poore Park reduced park debt to 6700. The park cost about 20000. net receipts for 1950 total 7251.88 with 7202.19 spent through December 1. By Dec 1 1949 ten percent of 13400 had been paid, now 40 percent with 5460 for 1950. Poore Park is a valued community asset with regional interest.

Mount Airy officer Alvin L. Blue returns to active duty with the city police on Monday after a Marine Corps tour starting September 4. Cpl. Blue had been in active Marine status since January 1948 and was recalled September 4, then relieved November 21 to resume Marine status. He served with the Military Police at Camp LeJeune patrolling the Wilmington area.
Sheriff Deputy Paul Monday travels to Adrian Michigan to pick up Carson Burton wanted in Surry County on charges of now support. Adrian police officials notify the Sheriff Department they are holding Burton in custody.
Eight crack power linemen from Floyd Pike Electrical Contracting Company left Mount Airy Wednesday for work in and around Rutland Vermont to repair power lines after relentless snow storms caused a regional blackout. The team including Jack Farris Melvin Thomas Arley Holder Joseph Humphrey Raymond Simmons Frank Simmons Warren Hill and Chester Cook is expected to take one to ten days to complete repairs.
The State Highway Commission received low bids for Surry County's bridge over Paul's Creek on the county road between Lowgap and Pipers Gap. John H. Brinkley Co. of Thomasville submitted the lowest bid of 29211.25 dollars, with the bids reviewed by the Highway Commission yesterday.
Judge H. H. Llewellyn postponed Monday's Recorder's Court session due to adverse weather. Schools across the county were closed Monday because of icy roads and freezing conditions, with the court now set for next Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs Raleigh Brim of Mount Airy were in a three car collision on East Pine Street near the Flat Rock bridge while rushing their year old child who had drunk kerosene to Martin Memorial Hospital. The infant improved slightly on Tuesday morning while Brim faced reckless driving charges and Jessup lacked a valid license. Police say Poore drove around the block then returned to the scene as the wreck knocked a center theater sign and sent two cars into a ditch. No one else was injured.
Mount Airy hosts a public Christmas decoration contest sponsored by Garden Gate Club. Entry is open to all city residents and families within limits with or without lighting. Prizes include a large turkey. judging occurs by day and night, with results Dec 22 in the paper and on radio.
Surry county draft board announces 15 men for induction on December 11 and 55 men for pre induction examinations on December 28. Through these calls total drafted since the Korea era began reaches 91, with 276 examined and 120 of 221 examined men passing both tests.
Hickory Construction Co. of Hickory North Carolina has won the $416 026 contract to erect the Reeves Memorial Building on East Pine Street and New Main Street in Mount Airy The project aims to cost about 500 000 with equipment and furniture estimated at over 30 000 The foundation plans to request federal permits to proceed tying the facility to the citys physical education program and the new high school plan
Fire Station in Mount Airy now offers county hunting licenses after a supply arrived. Officials said licenses had been out since Thanksgiving and are available again at the Fire Department.
