The Parmers Warehouse and Blue Ridge Restaurant on US 601 at the Bypass in Mount Airy announce an all day Open House tomorrow. The 71 000 square foot warehouse will be open for public inspection showcasing features for easier tobacco selling. Blue Ridge Enterprises Inc. backs the event with local farmers and friends invited.
Dr James Hill a UNC School of Dentistry graduate opens a new dental office at 823 Rockford Street Mount Airy across from the hospital. He and his wife Harriette Hook of Bessemer City reside at 111 Welch Street. He taught in Caldwell County and Augusta Ga, served in the Army 1953 55, then studied dentistry graduating in 1941. His hours are 9 to 5. The area near US 52 Bypass and US 601 grows into a busy business district with the new warehouse and Blue Ridge Restaurant nearby.
Two men were captured after thefts at Poole's Orchard east of Mount Airy. Robert Poole reported loss of an auto tire wheel tractor battery and wrenches. Authorities say William Vipperman and Georgie Lee Queen face larceny charges after a wreck in Virginia yielded the stolen battery and fire.
The eight graduates of Martin Memorial School of Nursing receive diplomas at Central Methodist Church as Attorney David L. Hiatt lauds nursing as one of life's greatest services. The ceremony features the Florence Nightingale Pledge and remarks on service to community and nation.

Officials of the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department announce the district extends from three miles to four miles. Residents urged to pay a $10 membership to Wayne Easter or any fireman. a $75 charge applies to those served who have not paid. Stakes will be placed this weekend. extended area covers US 52 A South, Buck Shoals Road, Stewart's Creek Bridge, US 601, Haystack Road, NC 89 West, Sparger Road, Piper's Gap Road, and US 2 North to White Pines Country Club Road. Fire department numbers: emergency ST 6 2212, business ST 6 7210.
Loyal Order of Moose members will solicit funds for the Cancer Crusade this Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4 at key intersections. Ferris Dulaney, Moose Governor, says the area missed its quota and Sunday’s collections aim to meet the target at US 52 at 601, NC 89 at Old Fancy Gap, Lebanon Street at N Main, and S Main at Worth Dulaney.
Three Surry County citizens join the Dixie Classic Fair Advisory Committee for the Community Development Division in Winston-Salem in October. W. Frank Comer of Dobson is named county chairman. Other members are Gerald Collins of Mount Airy and Joe Calloway of Mountain.
H C Woltz announces Quality Mills has acquired 34 000 square feet for plant No 2 at Standard Manufacturing site, moving knitting bleaching dyeing and finishing operations there. Renovation will precede occupancy, creating more jobs and boosting production. The existing South and Franklin Street plant covers about 100 000 square feet and growth follows prior expansions in 1957 and 1959. Employees benefit from the Profit Sharing Retirement Plan for three years or more.
John M. Pipkin pastor of White Plains Friends Meeting and secretary of the Mount Airy Ministerial Association departs Greensboro High Point Airport August 22 for the eighth Friends World Committee meeting in Kisuma Kenya, August 26 to September 4. North Carolina representatives Dr. Clyde A. Milner and Dr. Floyd Moore of Guilford College plus Tartt Bell of AMerican Friends Service Committee join about sixty North American delegates. Pipkin conducts a two week missionary survey for the North Carolina Yearly Meeting and plans to return September 21, chairing the NC Yearly Meeting Christian Education Committee and serving on the Five Year Meeting Christian Education Board.
Mrs. Alice Shugart Melton, 72, of Fruitland, died at 6 10 p m Wednesday in a Hendersonville hospital. Funeral held at Fruitland Baptist Church at 2 30 today. Survived by five daughters, one son, and sister Mrs W E Woodruff of Mount Airy. Interment in Fruitland cemetery.
The Surry C. B. Radio Club will hold its regular meeting at Pilot Mountain Pool at 6 o clock Sunday August 27. All members and prospective members are urged to attend as this will be the deadline for charter members. A picnic supper will follow the meeting. attendees are asked to bring a picnic basket. Miss Gerry Lynn Cloninger of Hickory, formerly of Mount Airy, is visiting this week with Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Gentry on Henri Street.
Surry County hosts six volunteer fire departments built by community effort. The Four Way unit since 1969 reports over a half million dollars in property saved and serves Bannertown Sheltontown Flat Rock and Mc Bride Road. Franklin Dobson Mountain Park State Road White Plains and Dobson each led by dedicated chiefs and crews guard thousands of residents.
