Mount Airy City Schools welcomed teachers back as summer ends and students prepare to start. Orientation for teachers on Monday precedes a first full day Tuesday August 30. Schools run a standard morning start with a short day, elementary at 11 am and junior high and high at 11:45 am.

Tobacco prices in the Carolinas and Virginia show strong gains with averages $10 to $13 higher than last year at 19 days in. The Old and Middle belt averages $93.45 per hundredweight, Mount Airy market last week $102.06 on 976174 pounds, season $93.31 on nearly 2.3 million pounds. Eastern Belt $102.41 for 19 days, Border North Carolina belt $103.90 after 23 days. Total sales over 144.7 million pounds Eastern Belt. 126.97 million on Border Belt. Stabilization Corp share around 7.8 to 30.2 percent.
