Mount Airy City Schools near ready for the new term with classes starting September 1 and full days September 2. Superintendent Bruce H. Tharrington notes Labor Day off and staff changes include one new commercial teacher and several new faculty members across Mount Airy High School South Main Bannertown Rockford J J Jones and other campuses. Hammer Wielder Arrested After Thursday Warrant
Bennie Carlton Kimbro was arrested Thursday morning by a sheriff's deputy after a warrant sworn by John Samuel Davis. Davis, struck several times with a hammer during a last week affray at Davis home, was treated at Northern Surry Hospital and released. Kimbro fled the scene and is absent without leave from the U S Army. he was taken into custody by Surry officers and confined in Hillsville jail.

Two mules left in a field Wednesday were struck by lightning during a thunder storm. Edd Hutchins of White Plains, owner of the high priced animals, said the bolt also stripped the bark from a nearby tree.

Mass liquor raid nets 17 arrests in Surry County
ATU agents and Surry County deputies arrested 17 people on illegal possession of tax paid and non tax paid liquor for sale. Three men were treated at Northern Surry Hospital for knife wounds and a chain-beat injury after a drunken brawl at a makeshift dance hall on Crooked Oak Church road in Pine Ridge.
